Check the manual or support page for your exact TV model and the task you have in mind. FAT32, NTFS, and exFAT support varies by brand and model; a drive the TV recognizes may still contain media files it cannot play.
How to choose a format for your TV
- Find the exact model number. Look on the TV’s label, in its settings, or in the documentation, then open that model’s manual or manufacturer support page.
- Check the guidance for your task. USB playback, live TV pause, recording, and storage expansion can have different requirements. Do not assume the playback format is right for another USB feature.
- Choose only from the formats the TV supports. If the documentation lists more than one, select a format that also suits the files you intend to store.
- Back up the drive before formatting. Formatting erases its contents. Copy anything you want to keep to another location first.
- Format the drive, reconnect it, and test it. Confirm that the TV recognizes the drive and then try the particular files or feature you plan to use.
What the manufacturer guidance says
These examples illustrate why the exact model matters. They apply only within the scope of the cited support material, not to every TV from the same brand.
| Support source | Published guidance | Scope and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| LG USA Support | Its article recommends FAT32 or NTFS and USB memory of 32 GB or less. | Applies to the TVs covered by that article; it is not a universal capacity limit. |
| Sony UK Support | Its compatibility table lists NTFS, FAT32, FAT16, and exFAT, with exFAT support differing across listed model groups. | The table was last modified on 2022-09-20. Check current documentation for the specific TV. |
| Sony USA Support | Most BRAVIA models support FAT16, FAT32, and exFAT for USB playback; the article says newer BRAVIA models from 2013 onward support NTFS. | Even a supported format does not guarantee that every file will play. |
| Roku Support (UK) | For the Roku streaming players covered, it lists FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, and HFS+, and says exFAT is unsupported. | This guidance concerns Roku streaming players. Roku TV live-pause has separate formatting behavior. |
Format support is not the same as file playback
A TV may recognize a drive’s file system but still fail to play a particular video, audio, or image file. Sony USA Support explicitly warns that playback may not be possible for some files even in supported formats. Check both the TV’s USB file-system guidance and its supported media-file specifications if a drive appears but a file will not open.
File size can also affect your choice: if a file exceeds a format’s per-file limit, you need another format the TV supports. Do not assume exFAT or NTFS is compatible just because it would suit the file; confirm the TV’s support first.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the TV does not recognize the drive
File-system incompatibility is only one possible cause. Work through these checks:
- Verify that the drive uses a file system supported by the exact TV model.
- Connect the drive directly to the TV rather than through an extension cable.
- If you are using an external hard drive, check its power requirements. For the TVs covered by its troubleshooting article, LG recommends external USB hard drives rated at 5 V and 500 mA or less.
- Consider whether autorun software or proprietary drivers on the drive could interfere with recognition; LG identifies these as possible causes.
- Consult the model’s manual for USB port limitations and task-specific requirements.
When the drive is for live pause, recording, or expansion
Do not reuse ordinary media-playback advice for other features. For example, Roku says using a USB drive for live pause on a Roku TV prompts a reformat. That behavior is separate from USB media playback on Roku streaming players. Check the instructions for the exact TV model and feature before allowing a reformat, since it can erase the drive’s contents.
