Zcash NU7 proposes a faster target block interval, new shielded-action limits and a Network Sustainability Mechanism. It also makes v4 transactions invalid. That last change has a direct consequence for anyone with funds in the Sprout pool: if they remain there when the upgrade activates, the proposal would make them unspendable. NU7 is still a draft, and its Mainnet activation height has not been set.
What NU7 changes
Blocks target a 25-second interval
ZIP 218 proposes reducing Zcash’s target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. That is a threefold faster target cadence, not a guarantee that a particular payment will be credited within 25 seconds. Exchanges and other services set their own confirmation requirements.
Transaction versions
NU7 does not introduce a new transaction format. Under ZIP 259, v4 transactions would become invalid after activation; v5 and v6 transactions would remain valid.
Shielded-action limits
ZIP 218 proposes per-pool and global limits on shielded actions as resource and spam protections. The proposal alone does not establish that ordinary wallet use will change; behavior can depend on wallet support and implementation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Network Sustainability Mechanism
ZIP 259 deploys ZIPs 235 and 237. Under the specification, an NSM balance is removed from circulation and is not spendable as a chain value pool. ZIP 237 is the halving-preserving variant. ZIP 259 explicitly says the mechanism does not raise ZEC’s supply cap.
Funding stream address list
The deployment scope also includes ZIP 2008, which updates the funding stream address list. The official materials reviewed do not describe this as a primary user-facing change.

What ZEC holders and wallet users should check
If you may have Sprout funds
Sprout transfers can only be represented by v4 transactions. Because NU7 would invalidate v4 transactions, funds left in the Sprout pool at activation would become unspendable under the proposal. Check your wallet for possible Sprout funds and consult current official wallet and migration guidance before any activation. The reviewed specifications do not establish a general recovery method after activation.
If you use other Zcash addresses
The proposal does not add a transaction format, and v5 and v6 remain valid. Wallet and service support can still vary, so check the current notices from your wallet provider or exchange rather than assuming every service will handle the upgrade identically.

What node operators, miners and services need to know
Full-node operators
Zcash’s official NU7 upgrade page says zcashd will not support NU7 if the expected major consensus changes are included, and directs operators toward Zebra. Follow current official release and migration instructions before changing a Mainnet node. The Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 build cited by the Foundation was a release candidate, not a stable release.
ASIC miners
The upgrade page says ASIC miners do not verify consensus rules and likely need no specific upgrade action themselves; they depend on their mining pool. Pool operators should communicate any required changes to miners.

Exchanges and infrastructure providers
Services should assess the proposed transaction-version rules, consensus changes, shorter target interval, shielded-action limits and fee or issuance effects against their own software and confirmation policies. ZIP 259 says old-version peers will be disconnected after activation, and pre-NU7 blocks may be rejected under the changed consensus rules.

As of October 7, 2026, the official NU7 page says, “The activation height for NU7 has not yet been set.” ZIP 259 is marked Draft and lists setting the Mainnet activation height and publishing the resulting NSM reissuance height as open issues.

A September 17 community timeline proposed October 6 for testnet activation, October 20 for a Mainnet decision and height, and November 5 for Mainnet activation. Those were proposed dates, not a confirmed activation schedule. On October 2, the Zcash Foundation said the testnet activation was expected around October 6 at height 4,465,026, and that Mainnet operators did not need to act yet because no Mainnet height had been set and Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 was not stable. Check the official upgrade page and the Foundation’s release-candidate announcement for current status.
Does a 25-second block target mean more ZEC is released each year?
Not simply because blocks are targeted more frequently. ZIP 218 reduces the per-block subsidy as block spacing shortens. The proposal also includes the Network Sustainability Mechanism described above; it does not raise the ZEC supply cap. The specifications establish these design elements, but they do not by themselves determine the exact resulting annual issuance in every circumstance.
