Keep sensitive or short-lived information out of persistent memory, check what is stored, and remove it when it is no longer useful. In ChatGPT, memory, chat history, and model-training controls are separate, so deleting one does not necessarily remove the others.
What should an AI assistant remember?
Persistent memory is most useful for context that is both durable and likely to improve future responses. A preference for concise explanations, an ongoing project’s non-confidential background, or an accessibility preference may save you from repeating yourself. A one-time question or temporary task detail usually does not need to persist.
Before asking an assistant to remember something, weigh four factors:
- Usefulness: Will retaining this detail meaningfully improve later answers?
- Sensitivity: Would you be uncomfortable if this information shaped responses in future conversations?
- Lifespan: Is it still relevant next week or next year, or only for the current task?
- Control: Can you inspect, correct, and delete it—and do you know where related copies may remain?
As a conservative rule, do not put passwords, financial credentials, government identifiers, confidential work material, health details, or intimate information into persistent memory. Products may handle these categories differently; this is a cautious practice, not a claim that every assistant treats them identically. OpenAI notes that sensitive information can appear in ChatGPT memory if shared. What ChatGPT remembers—and what it does not
ChatGPT memory is not the same as chat history. OpenAI says saved memories are stored separately from chats. A conversation may also inform personalization through reference to chat history, depending on the account’s settings. That distinction matters when removing information: deleting the conversation alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from it.
Memory is also separate from model improvement. Memory controls whether ChatGPT personalizes responses using retained context. The Improve the model for everyone setting controls whether eligible content from personal accounts may be used to improve OpenAI models. How to make ChatGPT forget something
- Review saved memory: Open Settings → Personalization → Memory, where available. Review the entries and remove the relevant saved memory. You can also ask ChatGPT what it remembers or ask it to forget a detail, then check the settings to verify the result. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Memory FAQ
- Delete the original chat: Remove the conversation in which the information was shared or referenced. Deleting the chat alone does not necessarily delete the separate memory.
- Check for other copies: Look in other chats, uploaded files, and connected apps where the same information may remain. Removing one copy does not remove copies in other sources.
- Consider reference to chat history: In Settings → Personalization → Memory, turn off Reference chat history if you want information remembered from past chats scheduled for deletion from OpenAI systems. OpenAI says this deletion is scheduled within 30 days. Your original chats remain unless you delete them separately, and turning this setting off does not delete saved memories. Deletion is not necessarily instantaneous across every copy or system. OpenAI says deleted-memory logs may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. Treat that as a policy period, not a guarantee that every trace disappears immediately. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Memory FAQ
How to use ChatGPT without adding training use
To stop new eligible conversations from being used to train OpenAI models, open Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. This changes model-improvement use, not memory or chat history: conversations can still appear in your history, and existing chats are not deleted. OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ

What Temporary Chat does—and does not do
Temporary Chat is useful for a one-off interaction when you do not want it to create or update personalization memory. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history and are not used to improve its models. You can choose before starting whether the chat may use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins; choose an unpersonalized context if you do not want those inputs used.
Temporary does not mean zero retention or confidentiality. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat subject to ordinary account settings. OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ

Check the assistant and account you actually use
Memory labels, defaults, deletion behavior, and retention rules vary by provider and may change. Do not assume a control in one assistant works the same way in another. Before relying on a privacy mode or deletion option, check the provider’s current documentation and the settings for your plan, platform, and workspace.
When comparing assistants or account types, check these specific behaviors rather than relying on labels such as “memory” or “incognito”:

For ChatGPT, OpenAI says improved memory in ChatGPT for Healthcare and Enterprise with Regulated Workspace is disabled by default and is not covered under the BAA.
