What you need depends on which Xbox generation you want to play. Microsoft’s Xbox PC app offers a limited official route for select original Xbox games; xemu emulates original Xbox games but requires system files dumped from a physical console; and Xenia emulates Xbox 360 games without requiring Xbox 360 system files. These options have different game catalogs, hardware requirements, and setup steps.
Choose the route that matches the console generation

What the official Xbox PC app requires
Microsoft’s early-release announcement, dated July 22, 2026, lists the following minimum and recommended specifications for the Xbox PC app route. These are requirements for that app, not for xemu or Xenia.

The announcement says the four launch games were available to purchase on PC and included with all Xbox Game Pass plans at that time, and that existing digital licenses for those games carried over. Microsoft also limits access through the app to supported regions. Check the Xbox Wire announcement for the catalog and availability details relevant to your region; the launch list should not be treated as a guarantee that no games have been added since publication.
Playing original Xbox games with xemu
Install xemu and check your PC
xemu is a free, open-source emulator for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its documented graphics requirement is an OpenGL 4.0-compatible GPU. The project cautions that performance depends on the computer and that compatibility reports reflect particular versions and systems, so a game’s reported behavior may not match yours exactly.

Obtain and configure the required system files
xemu needs three system files in addition to the emulator and a game: an MCPX Boot ROM image, a Flash ROM (BIOS) image, and a hard-disk image. The project says the copyrighted files required by xemu should be dumped from your own physical Xbox; it does not endorse obtaining them from unauthorized third-party downloads. Follow the project’s required-files documentation for file details and configuration.
A BIOS detail can prevent a confusing setup failure: an unmodified retail BIOS cannot currently boot games in xemu because key DRM functions are not implemented. The project documents using a debug BIOS or a modified retail BIOS that boots unsigned software. Its documentation also offers a prebuilt 8 GB hard-disk image with an unsigned basic dashboard as a setup option. Do not assume that a BIOS file found online is lawful to download or suitable for your setup.

Playing Xbox 360 games with Xenia
Check hardware and graphics support
Xenia’s Quickstart says the emulator checks minimum supported CPU and GPU capabilities when it starts and recommends installing current drivers. Xenia does not support OpenGL or Direct3D 11 and earlier, so a system relying on those graphics APIs is not suitable. It does not require Xbox 360 system files.
Use the game-specific compatibility information
Compatibility varies by game, and some functions, including saves, may not work perfectly. Before setting up a title, check the project’s FAQ and compatibility guidance for that specific game rather than assuming that a game will boot or be playable.

Use your own game content
Xenia’s Quickstart documents transferring content from an Xbox 360 with a USB storage device and Velocity, as well as ripping a disc using an Xbox 360 that can read it. Follow the project’s instructions for lawful personal copies; do not download commercial game files. The Quickstart also notes that digital Xbox Live Arcade games may default to demo or trial mode.
Choose an input device
A controller is optional, but it can make games designed for a console controller easier to play. Xenia supports XInput controllers by default, including Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers, according to its FAQ.

Can Xenia run original Xbox games?
No. Xenia is an Xbox 360 emulator and does not support original Xbox games. For original Xbox titles, use the limited Xbox PC app catalog if the game is included and the app is available in your region, or consider xemu and its system-file requirements.
