Moving to AMD’s AM5 platform means replacing your motherboard and switching to DDR5 memory. You may also need a supported Ryzen processor, a BIOS update, or new cooler mounting hardware. Before buying, check the exact motherboard’s CPU support list and minimum BIOS version, then confirm that its features and dimensions suit your other parts.
What changes when you upgrade to AM5?
AM5 is a different motherboard platform from AM4, and AMD describes it as a dual-channel DDR5 platform. An AM4 DDR4 kit cannot be reused as system memory on an AM5 board, so include a compatible DDR5 kit in your budget. If you are keeping your current processor, verify that it is supported by the specific AM5 motherboard; do not assume that changing sockets alone makes an older CPU compatible.
Write down your current CPU, motherboard model, memory type and capacity, cooler, case size, graphics card, storage drives, and power supply. That inventory helps distinguish parts that can potentially carry over from the motherboard and memory that must change.
Check CPU support and BIOS before choosing a board
AMD says AM5 motherboards support Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 processors, but support depends on the motherboard model and firmware. On 600-series boards, Ryzen 8000 and 9000 processors may require a BIOS update. The board maker’s CPU support list is the authority for the exact processor and minimum BIOS version: check it before purchase, not after assembling the system. See AMD’s AM5 chipset information and the selected board maker’s support page.

- AMD Socket AM5: Supports AMD Ryzen 9000/Ryzen 8000/Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs with AMD EXPO & Intel XMP Memory Module Support
- Commanding Power Design: Twin 14+2+1 Phases with 70A Power Stage Digital VRM Solution, 8-Layer 2X Copper PCB
- Cutting-Edge Thermal Design: 6mm Heatpipe, Fully Covered MOSFET Heatsinks, M.2 Thermal Guard, PCIe Ultra Durable Armor
- Next Gen Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, PCIe 5.0 NVMe x4 M.2, Front and rear USB-C
A board with an older BIOS may not boot with a newer processor. Get firmware files and update instructions from the motherboard manufacturer, and follow the instructions for the exact board revision. If the system cannot boot with the CPU you have, possible recovery paths are installing an older supported CPU to update firmware or using USB BIOS Flashback—but only if that board supports the feature. Confirm a workable update path before buying.
Choose a motherboard by its actual features
Chipset names indicate broad platform capabilities, not every feature or connection on an individual board. Compare the model’s specification and support pages against the connections and fit your build requires.

- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs
- Power Design: 14+2+2
- Thermals: VRM and M.2 Thermal Guard
- Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, 3x M.2 Slots, USB-C, Sensor Panel Link
- CPU support and firmware: Confirm the processor appears on the CPU list and identify the minimum BIOS version and update method.
- Expansion: Check PCIe generations and lane allocation for the graphics card and NVMe drives. AMD lists up to 44 usable PCIe lanes and up to 24 PCIe 5.0 lanes for X870E at the chipset level; board implementations vary, so these figures do not tell you how a particular board allocates slots.
- Storage: Count the M.2 and SATA connections you need, and check whether using one slot affects another connection.
- USB and other I/O: Check for USB4 if you need it, plus the specific rear and front USB ports, networking, and audio connections on the board.
- Size and case fit: Verify the board’s form factor and dimensions against the case.
- Overclocking: Check the board’s CPU and memory overclocking support if you plan to use those features.
AMD’s chipset comparison is useful for broad differences such as PCIe lanes, USB4, SATA capacity, and overclocking support. The individual motherboard specification controls what ports, slots, dimensions, and firmware features you actually get.
Plan for DDR5 and check the memory list
Because AM5 uses DDR5, budget for a DDR5 desktop memory kit rather than expecting to carry over AM4 DDR4. Check the motherboard’s supported memory list for the kit and configuration you intend to use. EXPO is a memory overclocking profile feature; a kit’s advertised speed is not a guarantee that every CPU-and-board combination will run at that speed.

Check whether your cooler and case can carry over
AMD’s November 2024 AM5 quick reference guide says AM4 coolers are compatible with AM5. Treat that as general socket-level guidance, not confirmation that every cooler will fit or cool every processor adequately. Check the cooler maker’s instructions for the correct mounting hardware, then confirm case clearance and that the cooler has sufficient capacity for your chosen CPU. If its mount or cooling capacity is unsuitable, budget for mounting hardware or a replacement cooler.
Also confirm that the motherboard fits the case and that the power supply has the CPU and graphics-card connections required by your specific components. These are build-specific checks; there is no universal answer without the exact part models.

Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Record the exact models of your current CPU, motherboard, memory, cooler, case, graphics card, storage, and power supply.
- Choose the target AM5 processor, if you are changing CPUs.
- Check the chosen motherboard’s CPU support list and minimum BIOS version; confirm a practical BIOS update path for your processor.
- Compare the board’s actual slots, ports, storage connections, networking, form factor, and overclocking support with your needs.
- Select DDR5 memory and check the board’s supported memory list.
- Verify cooler mounting hardware, cooling capacity, and case clearance.
- Confirm case fit and required power-supply connections for the complete build.
How much upgrade runway does AM5 offer?
AMD announced Socket AM5 support through 2029. That is a platform-level support horizon, not a guarantee that every future processor will work in every AM5 motherboard without a firmware update. For any later CPU upgrade, check the specific board’s support list and BIOS requirements again.
