What does a green tile mean?
A green tile confirms both parts of the clue: the guessed letter appears in the answer, and it occupies the same position in your guess. Keep that letter in that spot in later guesses.
What does a yellow tile mean?
A yellow tile confirms that the letter appears in the answer, but not in the position where you guessed it. Move it to a different position in your next guess. A yellow clue does not tell you which other position is correct.
How should you interpret repeated letters?
Color clues need extra care when a guess uses the same letter more than once. A green or yellow tile confirms a letter occurrence, but the colors do not always reveal the answer’s full count of that letter. For example, if the answer has one copy of a letter and your guess uses it twice, do not assume that both guessed copies must appear in the answer. Track each position and occurrence separately; a clue for one copy does not establish that another copy is present.

The New York Times and Hasbro’s 2022 tabletop Wordle rulebook explains that a letter may appear again and addresses guesses with multiple copies of a letter that occurs once in the secret word. The 2022 paper Selecting Seed Words for Wordle using Character Statistics likewise notes that answers can repeat characters and that tile colors alone do not show the total number of occurrences.
Does the same guidance apply to the tabletop game?
The licensed tabletop adaptation uses physical boards and green and yellow tiles for group play. Its rulebook defines green as a letter in the word and in the correct spot, and yellow as a letter in the word but in the wrong spot. It also suggests verbally identifying tile colors and underlining green letters to help color-blind players. Those are instructions for the physical game; current digital Wordle accessibility settings are not established here.
