Windows Disk Cleanup removes the file categories you select for a chosen drive and confirm. The checkbox list is the decision point: open each category’s description before selecting it, and take particular care with Previous Windows installation(s), which can remove your option to roll back to the earlier Windows version.

What Disk Cleanup can remove

Disk Cleanup shows categories of files associated with the drive you choose. The available categories depend on the device and its Windows state, so there is no universal list or guaranteed amount of space the tool will free. Microsoft does not publish a typical space-saved figure; the total depends on what is present and what you select.

In Microsoft’s documented workflow, Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Thumbnails are selected by default. You can clear a category’s checkbox if you do not want to remove it. Read the description shown for a category rather than treating every checkbox as an interchangeable cache.

How to review and remove categories

  1. Open Disk Cleanup, choose the drive to clean, and select OK.
  2. Review the categories in the list. Select a category to read its description, then check only the categories you intend to remove.
  3. Select OK and confirm the deletion.
  4. To see system-file categories, select Clean up system files, allow the additional calculation to finish, then review the refreshed list before confirming anything.

The system-cleanup list varies by device and Windows state. It can include Previous Windows installation(s) when that category is available. Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s Disk Cleanup instructions describe the category-selection workflow.

What the previous Windows installation option means

Previous Windows installation(s) refers to the files used to return to the earlier Windows version after an upgrade. Removing them also removes that rollback option; Microsoft says the previous version is automatically deleted ten days after an upgrade. If you may need to go back, do not select this category until you are sure you no longer need the option. Microsoft explains the rollback consequence and time limit.

What Disk Cleanup does not establish about untouched files

Disk Cleanup’s interface lets you choose from the categories it presents, but Microsoft’s documented list is not an exhaustive promise about every file the tool leaves alone on every Windows version and device. Use the category descriptions to understand the specific selections on your PC. The documented workflow is for freeing drive space; it does not establish Disk Cleanup as a secure-erasure or privacy-wipe tool.

Disk Cleanup versus Storage Sense

Disk Cleanup is a manual process: you choose a drive, inspect categories, select items, and confirm. Storage Sense is a separate Windows feature that can run automatically when enabled with its default settings and the device is low on disk space. Storage Sense works on the system drive, while Disk Cleanup asks you to choose a drive. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance describes its automatic behavior and settings.

Storage Sense does not manage Downloads or files from OneDrive and other cloud providers by default; those behaviors depend on settings you configure. In Windows 11, version 22H2 and later, Microsoft’s stated default is to make OneDrive cloud files online-only if they have not been opened for more than 30 days. That changes local availability; it is not a Disk Cleanup interval or a permanent deletion of the cloud file. Storage recommendations are another part of Windows storage management, distinct from the Disk Cleanup checkbox workflow. Microsoft’s storage-settings overview covers those options.

If you still need more drive space

Disk Cleanup may not free enough space if the selected categories contain little data. Microsoft also suggests reviewing large files and moving personal files to external storage, such as a USB drive or SD card. Moving files is a separate option, not a requirement for running Disk Cleanup. Microsoft lists these additional ways to free space.

For current context, Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle date does not change what Disk Cleanup’s categories do. Microsoft’s Windows update space guidance notes the end-of-support date.
