Bash’s widespread presence made the flaw consequential, but merely having Bash installed did not make a computer remotely exploitable. Exposure depended on a service or program passing untrusted data into Bash across a trust boundary.
What Shellshock was
Shellshock is the common name for a group of security flaws in GNU Bash, the command-line shell used by many Unix-like systems. The first widely reported issue was CVE-2014-6271, described by the National Vulnerability Database (NVD) as a bug in how Bash imported function definitions from environment variables: trailing text could be processed when Bash handled a crafted value. In certain circumstances, that could lead to arbitrary command execution. NVD’s CVE-2014-6271 record gives the issue a CVSS 3.1 base score of 9.8, rated Critical. That score describes severity, not the number of compromised machines or the total damage.
The key distinction is between Bash being present and an attacker being able to reach an affected Bash invocation. Bash was commonly included with Linux, BSD, Unix and Mac OS X systems, but installation alone did not establish a remote attack path. US-CERT’s September 25, 2014 alert identified those platforms and examples of potentially exposed services; that historical list is not a current inventory of supported or vulnerable products. US-CERT’s 2014 alert explains the contemporary scope.
How the Bash bug could become an attack
An attacker needed a way to supply crafted environment data to Bash. The vulnerable behavior was in Bash’s parsing and function-import logic; whether it could be exploited remotely depended on how another program constructed the environment and invoked Bash. NVD lists examples including Apache’s mod_cgi and mod_cgid, OpenSSH’s ForceCommand, scripts run by some DHCP clients, and other cases where environment settings crossed a privilege boundary. NVD’s description identifies these as possible contexts, not proof that every system running those products was exploitable.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The potential result also depended on the service, configuration and required access. Cisco described unauthenticated remote command execution as a worst-case scenario for some circumstances, while noting that many affected Cisco product cases required authentication. Cisco’s advisory illustrates why a vulnerability’s presence should not be confused with a universally unauthenticated attack path.
Why the first patch was not the end of the story
The initial fix for CVE-2014-6271 was incomplete. US-CERT warned in September 2014 that the patch did not fully resolve the issue and told administrators to watch for further updates addressing CVE-2014-7169. NVD likewise records the relationship between the original flaw and the incomplete fix; its CVE-2014-7169 entry describes the remaining problem as resulting from that incomplete repair.

Red Hat’s FAQ counted six related CVE assignments: CVE-2014-6271, CVE-2014-7169, CVE-2014-7186, CVE-2014-7187, CVE-2014-6277 and CVE-2014-6278. As of September 30, 2014, Red Hat said the first four had been fixed in the latest packages it referenced and the last two mitigated. That was a dated Red Hat package status, not a statement about every vendor’s releases. Red Hat also noted that systems using exported Bash functions might require affected services to be restarted or users to log in again after updates. Red Hat’s Shellshock FAQ provides that vendor-specific historical context.
What the exploitation records mean
NVD’s current records list CVE-2014-6271 and CVE-2014-7169 in CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. This supports describing these issues as exploited; it does not establish how many systems or people were affected. NVD’s 9.8 Critical score for CVE-2014-6271 is a severity rating, not a victim count or an estimate of financial losses. CVE-2014-6271 and CVE-2014-7169 show the current catalog references.

What to do on a system today
For a current computer, server or appliance, use the security guidance for its supported operating system or device vendor. Shellshock dates to 2014, so old package-version rules or generic commands may not accurately describe a modern distribution, embedded device or vendor-maintained system.

- Identify the vendor and supported release. Confirm the operating system or device model and whether the installed release remains supported.
- Check the vendor’s security guidance. Look for Shellshock or the relevant CVE identifiers, and follow the vendor’s current package or firmware instructions.
- Install the vendor-provided update if applicable. Package names, commands and update availability vary by platform; use the vendor’s procedure rather than a generic Bash download or version test.
- Complete any required service actions. Follow vendor instructions about restarting services or re-logging users. Red Hat’s 2014 note about exported functions and restarts applied to its affected package context, not automatically to every system.
- Handle suspected compromise separately. Applying an update closes a vulnerability but does not prove that an earlier intrusion did not occur. If compromise is plausible, follow your organization’s incident-response process and the vendor’s advice.
