The “Fifteen Dollar Linux Computer” was a proposed handheld Linux terminal described by Hackaday in 2022—not a confirmed $15 retail product. The reported design paired a case, keyboard, and small display with an Allwinner F1C100s processor, AAA-cell power, USB, and an SD reader. It was intended for command-line use, not a graphical desktop.
What was the Fifteen Dollar Linux Computer?
In a February 4, 2022 report, Hackaday’s Jenny List described designer Brian Benchoff’s concept for a low-cost, pocketable Linux handheld. It was presented as a complete device concept—with a case, keyboard, and display—rather than merely a computer board.
The name’s price is easy to misread. The report described $15 USD as a target for a large production run, not an established retail price. It did not confirm that the device was sold for that amount or reached the market as a finished product.
What hardware did the reported design include?
| Part or feature | What the 2022 report said |
|---|---|
| Processor | Allwinner F1C100s SoC |
| Display | 320 × 240 pixels |
| Input | Split rubber keyboard |
| Power | AAA cells |
| Connections and storage | USB port and SD reader; card compatibility and included storage were not stated in the report |
| Enclosure | A case was part of the described handheld design |
These specifications are details reported by Hackaday; they are not results from independent testing. The report does not establish a confirmed retail configuration or a kit’s contents.

What could it do?
The concept was aimed at command-line Linux rather than a graphical desktop. List put the distinction plainly: “It’s important to note that this is not intended to run a GUI, while it’s DOOM-capable it remains very much a command-line Linux tool.” The DOOM reference was reported capability, not a benchmark or independent performance test.
That makes the idea better understood as a tiny terminal for command-line tasks than as a small general-purpose PC. Its keyboard and screen were intended to make Linux interaction portable; the source does not establish performance figures or broader application compatibility.

Can you buy one or build it today?
No authoritative project page, current complete-device or kit listing, or verified build instructions are established here. Present-day sales and project maintenance are therefore unconfirmed. Treat the 2022 description as a historical project report, not evidence that a purchasable $15 computer is available now.
The reported AAA-cell power and SD reader suggest the kinds of supplies a comparable maker build might need, but they do not verify an accessory bundle, card compatibility, or a supported build recipe for this particular design.
