The “new AI-powered Clippy” was an unofficial chat app from FireCube, not a Microsoft product. In a June 2023 report, BetaNews described it as a nostalgia-focused desktop companion powered by OpenAI GPT-3.5; using it then required an OpenAI API key. It was separate from Microsoft’s Windows Copilot preview, which was designed to help with Windows tasks as well as answer questions.
What was the AI-powered Clippy?
FireCube’s Clippy was a third-party desktop chat app that brought Microsoft Office’s familiar paperclip assistant back as a conversational character. Its appeal combined access to an AI chat interface with the novelty of keeping Clippy visible on the desktop. BetaNews reported that users could pin it to the screen for quick access to chat or leave it there for nostalgia (BetaNews, June 30, 2023).
That description is historical: it reflects the app as reported in 2023, not a guarantee that the same app, download, or setup remains available today.
Was Clippy made by Microsoft?
No. The Clippy app discussed in the article was made by FireCube and was not an official Microsoft product. Microsoft’s Windows Copilot was a separate project. The shared Clippy name and familiar character do not establish Microsoft endorsement or a connection between the two projects.

How was Clippy different from Windows Copilot?

Microsoft’s June 29, 2023 announcement presented Copilot as a docked sidebar on the right side of Windows 11. Its preview could respond to requests and perform selected Windows actions (Windows Insider Blog). Clippy, by contrast, was a separate app centered on chat and the paperclip character rather than Windows-level controls.
Did Clippy use ChatGPT or GPT-3.5?
BetaNews reported that FireCube’s app used OpenAI GPT-3.5 and required an OpenAI key at the time. That is the specific model and setup described in the June 2023 article; it should not be taken as confirmation of the app’s current model, operating requirements, or availability.

Could you pin Clippy to the screen?
According to the FireCube developers as quoted by BetaNews, “Clippy can be pinned to the screen for quick access to chat or just be left for nostalgia.” This refers to the app’s reported desktop behavior, not a Windows Copilot feature. The original report does not establish whether a current version or download is still available.
