STMicroelectronics and IS2T launched the STM3220G-JAVA Starter Kit as an evaluation platform for building embedded Java applications on STM32 hardware. It paired ST’s STM3220G-EVAL board with an evaluation version of IS2T’s MicroEJ SDK. The kit is now marked obsolete and out of production by ST, so it is a historical platform—not a current STM32 development-board option.
What the STM3220G-JAVA kit included
The original kit combined the STM3220G-EVAL board, built around an STM32F2-series microcontroller, with a DVD-ROM containing an evaluation STM32Java SDK based on MicroEJ. ST says a Java demo was programmed in the board’s STM32F207IGH6 MCU. The software evaluation license was limited to three months from first launch and one hour of runtime, according to ST’s product page.
The launch was aimed at embedded product developers seeking graphical interfaces and peripheral-driven applications, including white goods, office equipment, and industrial controls. ST’s stated vision was to bring smartphone-like interfaces to small, low-cost, power-sensitive devices while allowing developers to combine Java with existing C code. In launch coverage, Embedded.com quoted ST describing STM32 as an “ideal platform for Java to enter the embedded world.”
How Java ran on STM32
This was not a general Java feature built into every STM32 chip. IS2T supplied Java Platforms (JPFs) tailored to STM32 microcontrollers and boards. A JPF abstracted hardware features for Java applications, while the runtime and associated tools supported development, simulation, testing, and deployment.

Board features and libraries
The documented platform support included a 3.2-inch, 240 × 320 touch TFT color display; MicroUI and Micro Widget Toolkit (MWT) graphics; Ethernet with TCP/IP sockets; an RS-232 USART; joystick and buttons; four LEDs; and the board’s embedded ST-LINK/V2. The SDK also provided SNI and SP interfaces for communication between Java and C.
Simulation and deployment
ST’s January 2013 data brief described Quick Start and Production JPFs, as well as extendable JPFs for application-specific hardware. It also described paired simulation and embedded JPFs: a Java binary validated on SimJPF could then be validated on EmbJPF. The brief listed MicroUI and MWT graphics libraries alongside tools for fonts, storyboards, and front-panel design.

What the published footprint figures mean
ST’s 2013 STM32-JAVA data brief specified less than 30 KB of flash, less than 1.5 KB of RAM, and startup below 2 ms at 120 MHz. These are historical vendor specifications for the described platform, not results from a current independent benchmark and not a guarantee for every MicroEJ deployment. Memory use and startup depend on the particular runtime, application, hardware, and configuration.
Is the original ST Java kit still available?
No. ST labels the STM3220G-JAVA product “Obsolete” and “Out of Production” on its product page. The original kit should not be confused with a generic STM32 development board or assumed to be available as a current retail product.

How IS2T relates to MicroEJ today
IS2T was the software company behind the kit and its MicroEJ-based SDK. The company says its legal name remains IS2T for formal documents, while it presents itself publicly as MicroEJ. That makes “IS2T” the historical company name readers may encounter in the kit’s launch materials and “MicroEJ” the current public brand.
What MicroEJ’s current tooling direction is
MicroEJ’s March 20, 2025 announcement says SDK 6 was first released in 2024 for application development. It supports IntelliJ IDEA, VS Code, Android Studio, and Eclipse, adds JDK 17 and JDK 21 support, and supports mixed simulation, embedded, and J2SE tests. The announcement places SDK 5 in maintenance mode and says it reaches end of life by July 2028 under the cited EULA. These current tooling details do not mean the discontinued STM3220G-JAVA hardware kit has returned or that SDK 6 supports that board; board-specific support should be confirmed with MicroEJ.

How this differed from a conventional STM32 C/C++ workflow
| Area | STM3220G-JAVA platform | Conventional STM32 C/C++ workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Language and runtime | Java applications ran through MicroEJ’s compact runtime and STM32-specific Java Platforms. | Applications are typically built as native firmware in C or C++; the Java kit did not make Java a standard feature of every STM32. |
| GUI and widget tools | Documented MicroUI and MWT libraries, plus font, storyboard, and front-panel design tools. | Depends on the selected framework and project; these MicroEJ tools were specific to its platform. |
| Simulation and hardware testing | ST described SimJPF and EmbJPF pairs for validating the same Java binary in simulation and on embedded hardware. | Tooling and parity depend on the chosen development environment; no general comparison figure is established here. |
| Java/C interoperability | The SDK documented SNI and SP interfaces for mixing Java with C code. | C and C++ can be used directly in the firmware, without a Java runtime boundary. |
| Memory and startup | ST’s 2013 brief gave historical figures of under 30 KB flash, under 1.5 KB RAM, and startup below 2 ms at 120 MHz. | Requirements vary with the MCU, code, libraries, and configuration; no directly comparable figure is stated here. |
| Hardware and lifecycle | The launch kit targeted STM32F2 and STM32F4 devices; the STM3220G-JAVA kit itself is now obsolete and out of production. | Board and MCU support depend on the selected STM32 product and toolchain rather than this discontinued kit. |
| Current toolchain support | MicroEJ’s current software direction is SDK 6; SDK 5 is in maintenance mode, with an announced end of life by July 2028 under its cited EULA. | Toolchain support depends on the tools and versions selected for a project. |
Can you run Java on an STM32 now?
The historical kit shows that Java applications could run on specific STM32 hardware using MicroEJ’s runtime and board abstractions. It does not establish that Java runs natively on all STM32 devices or that the old kit is a supported path today. For a current project, identify the exact MCU and board, then confirm compatible MicroEJ support and licensing with MicroEJ before choosing hardware or migrating software.
