What was OpenAI’s “Strawberry” model called?
“Strawberry” was the pre-release name associated with the project. OpenAI’s public product name was o1-preview, introduced as the first release in the OpenAI o1 series. OpenAI described it as an early preview that would receive updates.
The announcement is dated September 12, 2024. It should therefore be understood as a historical launch rather than a newly released model. OpenAI’s Model Release Notes and ChatGPT release notes document subsequent product changes; the launch-era access terms below do not establish current availability.
What was o1 designed to do?
OpenAI said o1 models were built to “spend more time thinking before they respond.” The intended advantage was handling harder reasoning problems than earlier models, with an emphasis on science, coding, and mathematics. OpenAI’s research explainer said performance improved as the models received more reinforcement learning and more computation at answer time.

That approach is most relevant when a task benefits from working through constraints or multiple steps. It is not a promise that o1 will be better for every question, nor that a strong benchmark result guarantees a correct answer in everyday use.
How did o1 compare with GPT-4o at launch?
OpenAI’s September 2024 announcement reported results on selected evaluations. These are the company’s own figures, not independently replicated results or measures of all real-world tasks.

OpenAI also introduced o1-mini, describing it as a faster, cheaper option for reasoning tasks that did not need broad world knowledge, and as particularly effective at coding. The launch post said o1-mini was 80% cheaper than o1-preview. That was a September 2024 comparison, not a current price statement.
What were o1-preview’s limitations?
At launch, o1-preview did not support web browsing or file and image uploads. Those omissions mattered for tasks that depend on current online information or documents and images supplied by the user. OpenAI also cautioned that GPT-4o could be more capable for many common uses at the time.

OpenAI discussed safety work alongside the launch. Its research explainer reported safe-completion scores of 0.934 for o1-preview and 0.714 for GPT-4o on specified challenging jailbreak and edge-case prompts. This was an OpenAI-run evaluation, not an independent safety certification or a probability that either model will behave safely in every interaction. OpenAI said its Safety and Security Committee and Board reviewed the safety assessment and launch fitness.
Could people use o1 in ChatGPT or through the API?
At the September 2024 launch, OpenAI said ChatGPT Plus and Team users would receive access that day, with Enterprise and Edu access planned for the following week. API prototyping was offered to developers meeting usage-tier requirements, with a stated limit of 20 requests per minute at that time. These details describe the original rollout only; they do not confirm that o1-preview, those limits, or the same plan entitlements remain available.

The official Model Release Notes and ChatGPT release notes track later model and product changes, but current o1-specific identifiers, API rates, and plan-by-plan availability are not established here.
