Notion Mail was Notion’s email client for Gmail and Google Workspace—not a separate email service. Its standalone inbox shut down on September 22, 2026. Notion says your email history remains in Gmail, but some Notion Mail-specific items and settings needed to be saved before the shutdown.
What was Notion Mail?
Announced in October 2024, Notion Mail was a Notion-designed interface for Gmail and Google Workspace accounts. Your underlying mailbox remained with Google; Notion Mail added a customizable way to view and work with its messages. Notion’s setup guidance required a Notion account as well as a Gmail or Google Workspace account.
Notion described its goal as “where email works for you and your workflows,” in a phrase quoted by Frederic Lardinois in TechCrunch’s October 24, 2024 report.
What made it different from Gmail?
Custom views and AI organization
The central idea was to shape the inbox around a person’s work. Users could create views and use AI prompts to organize messages, then prioritize email within filtered views. These were features of the former client, not capabilities that remain available in a standalone Notion Mail inbox.

Calendar scheduling and message tools
Notion Mail connected with Notion Calendar so users could share availability through a scheduling button. Its documented composer also supported Notion-style content blocks, snippets, quick replies, AI-assisted writing, scheduled sending, and inserting calendar availability. These features belonged to the retired app.
Is Notion Mail still available?
No. Notion’s official shutdown guidance says the standalone inbox closed on September 22, 2026; September 21 was the last day to save or export data users wanted to keep. The shutdown was complete as of October 8, 2026.

Notion’s documentation described the former app as available on Mac, the web, and iOS 17 or later, with Windows support listed as forthcoming. Its security page said it supported Gmail only, not Outlook. Those are historical availability and compatibility details, not instructions for accessing the discontinued inbox.
What happened to emails and other data?
Notion says messages synchronized with Gmail remain in Gmail. That does not mean every item or setting from Notion Mail transferred: email history and client-specific organization are different things.

These distinctions come from Notion’s shutdown guidance. The stated September 21, 2026 save-or-export deadline has passed, so the guidance should not be read as a current way to access the closed inbox.
What Notion email features remain?
Notion says its Gmail AI Connector and email tools for agents can support continuing email workflows. Mail blocks already placed on Notion pages also remain. These are separate Notion workflows; they do not reopen or replace the standalone Notion Mail inbox.

What did Notion say about security and AI access?
For Notion Mail, Notion described encryption at rest using AES-256 and encryption in transit using TLS 1.2 or greater. Those statements describe storage and transport encryption; they do not establish end-to-end encryption.
Notion’s former AI help documentation said everyone could try Mail AI features for free, while unlimited access required a Business or Enterprise plan. Those were historical terms for the discontinued client, not a current plan recommendation or route to using Notion Mail.

Notion’s shutdown guidance explains the closure and its data effects but does not establish a reason for ending the standalone app. A business or product-strategy explanation should not be assumed from the shutdown announcement alone.
