Pixel Arena was a 3D fan experience inside the NBA app, launched by Google and the NBA for the 2022 Playoffs. Fans could explore a virtual basketball environment, view game data and highlights, answer trivia, and customize an avatar. Google said it worked regardless of device or operating system, so a Google Pixel phone was not required. The cited official updates describe changes through March 2023 but do not confirm whether Pixel Arena is available now.
What was Pixel Arena?
Pixel Arena was a digital environment built into the NBA app, not a physical arena or a Google Pixel phone feature. The NBA announced it on April 16, 2022, as an experience that would begin during halftime of 2022 Playoffs games. Google described it as a virtual space where fans could create, play, share, and celebrate their Playoffs skills.
The launch announcement tied the project to the NBA’s broader partnership with Google, announced in October 2021. That partnership named Google Pixel the Official Fan Phone of the NBA, NBA G League, and NBA 2K League, and the first presenting partner of the NBA Playoffs. The branding did not make a Pixel phone a condition of using Pixel Arena.
How did Pixel Arena work at launch?
Google and the NBA described a virtual basketball space drawing on game information and Playoffs activity. The NBA’s launch announcement focused on halftime; Google said fans could also visit between games and choose a game, including a past game. On a phone, users could move their device to look around using its gyroscope.
