Microsoft’s Athena was the reported codename for a custom AI chip project that The Information said was being tested by a small group of Microsoft and OpenAI employees. Its initial design was planned for TSMC’s 5nm process, but the reporting described a development plan—not a confirmed commercial product, shipment, or set of published specifications.
What was Microsoft’s Athena chip?
Athena was an internal codename for a Microsoft AI accelerator project. The Information reported on April 18, 2023, that work had begun as early as 2019 and that at least 300 people were working on the project. It also reported that a small group of Microsoft and OpenAI employees was testing the chip.
The reported goal was to run large language model (LLM) training and inference. The chip was intended for infrastructure supporting Microsoft’s services and its work with OpenAI; the report did not specify which particular models or services would use it.

Yes. According to The Information’s April 2023 report, the initial Athena design was expected to use TSMC’s 5nm process. That was a reported plan, not confirmation that TSMC manufactured the chip in volume or that Microsoft shipped it. The report contemplated multiple future generations, conditional on mass production.

Why was Microsoft developing its own AI chip?
The reported motivation was to reduce the cost and supply pressure of buying large quantities of Nvidia accelerators. A custom chip could give Microsoft another way to provision AI computing for its cloud and internal workloads, but the report supplied no measured savings, independent benchmarks, or evidence that Athena achieved those aims.
In the same report, Forrester Research senior cloud analyst Tracy Woo put the broader industry rationale this way: “You can buy from Nvidia, but when you’re looking at these huge behemoths like Google and [Amazon], they have the capital to build out and design their own chips.”

Did Microsoft release Athena?
The Information’s 2023 account described internal testing, not a public launch. The cited reporting does not confirm that Athena entered mass production or shipped commercially, so it is more accurate to call it a reported development project than a released product.

Reuters reported in February 2024 that the company planned to use Intel Foundry for a custom computing chip, but that report did not identify the chip as Athena. It indicates a broader custom-silicon strategy; it does not show that Athena moved to Intel.

Is Athena the same chip as Maia?
That relationship has not been established. Athena was the codename used in The Information’s 2023 reporting. Microsoft later used the Maia name publicly; Reuters reported in January 2026 that the second-generation Maia 200 used TSMC’s 3nm process. The cited reporting does not document a formal rename from Athena to Maia, so Maia may reflect later program evolution, but the two names should not be treated as confirmed aliases.
| Chip or project | Foundry and process | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Athena | TSMC, 5nm planned for the initial design | Internal testing was reported; commercial shipment and mass production were not confirmed (The Information, April 18, 2023). |
| Maia 200 | TSMC, 3nm | Reuters described it in January 2026 as Microsoft’s second-generation publicly named Maia chip. A formal link to Athena is not stated. |
What are Athena’s specifications and performance?
The public details in The Information’s April 2023 report establish the planned process and intended workloads, not a full specification or a performance profile. The following details were not stated in the cited reporting:
Rank #4
- 48GB AI graphics accelerator
- Chip architecture, die size, or transistor count
- Memory type, capacity, or bandwidth
- Benchmark scores or comparisons with Nvidia accelerators
- Yield, price, shipment volume, or a confirmed mass-production date
Maia 200’s reported 3nm process is a separate, later product detail. It does not establish Athena’s specifications or performance.
