Valve is not confirmed to be making $20 billion this year. The figure is an estimate of Steam’s gross sales: Alinea Analytics estimated $16.5 billion for the first nine months of 2026 and forecast that the platform could pass $20 billion for the full year. That is money spent through a marketplace, not Valve’s reported revenue, profit, or cash balance. If Steam’s success gives Valve room to invest, the strongest priorities are safer, more usable services for players, better tools and visibility for developers, and continued access to PC gaming across devices.
Is Valve really making $20 billion?
No verified company financial figure in the available reporting establishes that Valve is making, retaining, or holding $20 billion. GamesRadar and Tom’s Hardware attribute the estimate to Alinea Analytics: Steam had an estimated $16.5 billion in gross sales during the first nine months of 2026, with a forecast of more than $20 billion for the full year. The full-year number is a projection, not a final result. GamesRadar’s report and Tom’s Hardware’s report do not provide audited Valve accounts.

That distinction matters because gross marketplace sales are not the same as the platform operator’s retained revenue. The estimate alone cannot establish how much Valve keeps after the marketplace’s costs and other financial arrangements, still less its profit or available cash. The reporting reviewed here does not establish Valve’s current cash balance, operating profit, or full-year 2026 corporate revenue.
What should Valve do with the money?
There is no verified pot of $20 billion to allocate, so any specific budget or percentage would be invented. But if Steam’s success creates room for new investment, Valve should judge it by three outcomes: does it make gaming safer and easier for players, give developers a fairer chance to reach audiences, and strengthen PC gaming without tying users to a single device?

Make Steam safer and easier to use
Put investment into the everyday experience: make account protection and security easier to understand, reduce friction in finding and managing games, and improve the clarity of marketplace information. The point is not simply to add features; it is to help people make informed choices and protect the libraries and accounts they rely on.
These priorities also deserve scrutiny. In a 2025 consolidated amended complaint, plaintiffs alleged that Steam had more than $10 billion in gross revenue in 2024, nearly 2 billion accounts, and up to 39 million concurrent users. The filing also raised claims about Steam’s business terms, competition, and investment in areas including security. Those are allegations by plaintiffs, not court findings or independently verified company results. The complaint is relevant as a reminder that the scale of a platform brings responsibilities, not as proof that the claims have been established.

Give developers better tools and a better chance to be found
Steam’s value depends on more than the number of games it sells. Developers need useful tools to bring games to market, understand how they are reaching players, and make their work discoverable in a crowded store. Valve should improve those capabilities while making discovery work for players too: recommendations and browsing should surface relevant games without allowing visibility to become a privilege reserved for the biggest releases.
This is especially important for smaller studios, for whom a good game can struggle to find an audience amid a large catalog. Better discovery and clearer, more useful developer-facing tools would benefit both sides of the marketplace.

Keep PC gaming accessible across devices
Valve should continue building hardware and software that make PC libraries usable in more settings, while keeping access to those libraries broad. The Steam Deck is one example: Tom’s Hardware describes it as Valve hardware that gives users portable access to most of their Steam library. It illustrates how a device can extend PC gaming without making a device purchase the point of the business case. Tom’s Hardware’s Steam Deck coverage provides that product context.
The larger priority is an open ecosystem: players should be able to choose how and where they play, and developers should not have to design for only one hardware path. Hardware can expand access, but it should complement the PC platform rather than narrow it.

How much of Steam sales does Valve actually keep?
The reported gross-sales estimate does not answer that question. The reporting does not establish a current retained share, and it would be misleading to multiply the forecast by an assumed commission and present the result as Valve revenue. Gross sales, the amount retained by a marketplace, company revenue, profit, and cash on hand are different measures.
The 2025 complaint’s allegation of more than $10 billion in Steam gross revenue in 2024 is likewise a claim in a plaintiffs’ filing, not a verified figure for Valve’s take. A reliable answer about what Valve keeps would require company financial information that the cited reporting does not provide.

Why put players and developers at the center?
There is historical support for that principle in a 2011 interview with Valve co-founder and executive Gabe Newell, quoted in PC Gamer’s 2026 retrospective: “It’s a lot easier for me to think of it as having a responsibility to gamers and game developers,” PC Gamer’s retrospective also discusses his view of PC gaming’s openness and capacity for innovation. The remark is historical context, not a current spending commitment. It nevertheless offers a useful standard for evaluating what Valve could do next: invest in the people and openness that make the platform valuable, rather than treating a sales forecast as a reason to spend for its own sake.
