To reach the Samsung T9’s maximum rated sequential speeds, connect it to a host port that supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps), use a cable that supports the same interface, and ensure UASP mode is enabled. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee that speed: USB-C describes the plug shape, not the data rate.
What connection does the T9 need for full speed?
Samsung specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps) as the T9’s interface. Samsung says the host device and connection cable must support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, and UASP mode must be enabled, to reach its maximum sequential read/write speeds. See Samsung’s T9 product specifications for that condition.
Check all three parts of the connection: the computer’s port, the cable’s supported data interface, and UASP. A port with a USB-C socket may support a different USB generation or lane configuration, so the connector’s appearance does not establish that it supports Gen 2×2.
What speeds does Samsung rate the T9 for?
Samsung lists sequential read speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s across the 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB models. Its rated sequential write speeds are capacity-dependent:

These are Samsung’s manufacturer-rated maximum sequential figures, not guaranteed results for every computer or file transfer. Samsung’s announcement says performance depends on the host configuration, cable, and system environment; it reports testing with an ASUS ROG STRIX Z590-E GAMING WIFI motherboard, an Intel i9-10900K processor, and Windows 11 Pro. The figures and test configuration appear in Samsung Newsroom’s T9 announcement.
The interface’s 20 Gbps is a data rate expressed in gigabits per second; the drive’s sequential ratings are expressed in megabytes per second. They are different units, and neither number should be treated as a promise of a particular real-world file-copy speed.

How to check your setup
- Check the host port’s specifications. Look for USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 or an explicit 20 Gbps data-rate listing for the port you plan to use. USB-C by itself is not enough to verify this.
- Check the cable’s data capability. Samsung includes USB-C-to-C and USB-C-to-A cables, according to its UK T9 product page. A matching connector does not, by itself, confirm Gen 2×2 support; Samsung’s speed condition applies to the cable as well as the host.
- Confirm UASP is enabled. Samsung lists UASP support for the T9 and includes enabled UASP mode in its maximum-speed condition. The specific place to check depends on the host and operating system.
- Use the rating for your capacity as the reference. The listed maximum write rating is 1,950 MB/s for 1TB and 2TB, and 2,000 MB/s for 4TB; all three are rated up to 2,000 MB/s for sequential reads.
If you need to verify a particular computer, check the manufacturer’s specifications for that model and port. Samsung’s general T9 specifications do not establish which USB modes a specific computer supports.

Samsung lists backward compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 3.1, USB 3.0, and USB 2.0 on its UK product page. That establishes compatibility with those listed generations, not that an older connection will meet the USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 condition for the T9’s maximum rated performance.

For broader operating-system compatibility, Samsung’s UK page notes that some operating systems may require reformatting. That is a compatibility consideration, separate from the connection requirements for maximum speed.
