1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUSB 3.0 is a 5 Gbit/s interface tier, but that is not the speed at which a portable hard drive copies files. The actual rate depends on the drive and the workload: manufacturer examples range from “up to 130 MB/s” for one LaCie portable HDD to “up to 220 MB/s” for Seagate’s higher-performance Backup Plus Fast. Those are model-specific advertised maxima, not a universal speed guarantee.
USB 3.0’s 5 Gbit/s rate is not a file-copy speed
USB 3.0 refers to the 5 Gbit/s tier in the current USB naming framework. USB-IF’s USB 3.2 overview identifies 5, 10, and 20 Gbit/s tiers, with USB 3.2 encompassing earlier 3.x generations. Compatible products communicate at the lowest speed capability shared by the devices in the connection.
The 5 Gbit/s figure describes the interface’s signaling rate, not how quickly a hard drive reads or writes a file. Converting it to a theoretical 625 MB/s does not produce a realistic file-copy expectation: it ignores protocol overhead as well as the drive’s own performance limits. Lenovo likewise notes that actual transfer rates are slower than listed data rates and vary with host and peripheral processing, file attributes, system configuration, and operating environment (Lenovo’s USB transfer-rate statement).
What portable hard-drive speed figures show
Manufacturer specifications illustrate the difference between a USB interface rate and a model’s claimed drive throughput. The figures below are advertised “up to” claims; they are not independent, like-for-like test results.

| Example | Manufacturer figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| USB 3.0 / USB 3.2 Gen 1 | 5 Gbit/s | Interface tier, not a measured file-copy rate; USB-IF says connected products operate at the lowest shared capability (USB-IF). |
| LaCie USB 3.0 portable hard drive | Up to 130 MB/s | Product-specific maximum advertised in the LaCie drive datasheet. |
| Seagate Backup Plus Fast portable drive | Up to 220 MB/s | Product-specific maximum advertised in the Backup Plus Fast datasheet; this is a higher-performance model, not a representative promise for every portable HDD. |
| WD My Passport family | Up to 5 Gbit/s | Interface transfer-rate claim, not a measured hard-drive file-copy benchmark. WD’s support page, updated 2026-02-18, lists USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 2.0 support (WD My Passport size differences). |
These examples do not establish one “typical” speed for portable hard drives. A figure for one model cannot stand in for another, and a manufacturer’s maximum is not a guarantee of sustained performance with every file, computer, or connection.
Why the same drive can copy at different speeds
File size and transfer pattern
A transfer of a few large files and a transfer of many small files can run at different rates. File attributes are among the factors Lenovo identifies as affecting actual transfer speed, but the available specifications do not establish a universal numeric penalty for small-file copies.

Read, write, and measurement conditions
Copying from the drive and copying to it are different workloads, and short bursts or an operating system’s progress estimate should not be treated as a sustained benchmark. For a useful comparison, test the same direction and file set on the same computer and connection. The manufacturer figures above are not comparable independent tests.
Host, cable, and connection path
The host port, cable, drive, and any hub or adapter in between all affect which USB mode the connection can use. A plug’s shape alone does not identify its speed tier. A shared or limited connection can cause devices to operate at a lower common capability, consistent with USB-IF’s guidance on negotiated speed.

How to check a slower-than-expected transfer
- Confirm the supported USB mode. Check the drive’s specifications and the computer’s port documentation; verify that the cable and any adapter support the intended mode. Do not infer speed from connector shape alone.
- Connect directly for a comparison. If the drive is attached through a hub, dock, or other shared path, test it directly on a compatible host port to see whether the connection path is limiting it.
- Compare different file workloads. Copy a large file and a group of small files in the same direction. Note the conditions and treat the results as workload-specific rather than a universal rating.
- Check the system context. Host and peripheral processing capability, file attributes, system configuration, and operating environment can all affect actual transfer rates.
- Inspect the cable before replacing it. Replace it if it is damaged or unsuitable, not simply to try to make a mechanical drive reach USB’s interface ceiling. For the cited My Passport family, WD says a cable change is not needed unless the existing cable is damaged.
What to expect in practice
A portable hard drive connected over USB 3.0 has a 5 Gbit/s interface tier available, but its file-copy rate is determined by the drive and the conditions of the transfer. A result around 100 MB/s is not, by itself, evidence that the connection is faulty: the USB headline rate is not a promise that a spinning drive will copy files at that rate. To judge a particular setup, compare like-for-like transfers and confirm that the host, cable, and connection path support the intended USB mode.
