A “T20 torque screwdriver 10–20 in-lb” is a practical search phrase for finding a suitable tool, but that range does not mean every SP5 screw should be tightened to the same setting.
What torque screwdriver should you buy for an EPYC SP5 system?
Look for a driver that is accurate and repeatable at low inch-pound settings, has an adjustment range that includes the value in your platform’s manual, accepts a T20 Torx bit, and supports clockwise tightening. Prefer a model with a locking adjustment and calibration documentation. The driver’s range must include the required torque; its maximum rating alone is not enough.
- Torque range: Must cover the exact documented setting. Low-range tools are appropriate because SP5 retention and cooling hardware can use inch-pound values.
- Bit fit: T20 is specified in the cited HPE and Supermicro procedures. Confirm that the driver accepts the required bit style.
- Accuracy and repeatability: Check the manufacturer’s accuracy specification at the setting you will use, not just across the tool’s full range.
- Adjustment and calibration: A locking mechanism helps prevent accidental setting changes; calibration documentation helps establish that the tool is suitable for controlled assembly.
- Direction: Confirm the driver applies controlled torque clockwise for tightening.
A broad automotive torque wrench is a poor fit if its usable range starts above the low values specified for the SP5 assembly you are working on.
Why there is no universal SP5 torque setting
The T20 bit interface is common in the cited SP5 procedures, but the torque depends on the platform and the particular assembly. HPE’s XD665 maintenance guide specifies one value for captive cold-plate screws; Supermicro’s EPYC server installation manual gives a different value for its CPU installation procedure. These instructions are not interchangeable.

AMD identifies EPYC 9005 processors as using SP5, while noting that system compatibility depends on the server manufacturer and platform configuration: AMD EPYC 9005 Series. Use the service manual for the exact server or motherboard, rather than choosing a setting based on the socket name alone.

The figures differ substantially because they apply to different documented procedures and platforms. Do not average them, transfer one to another system, or assume a heat sink, cold plate, and socket retention frame share a setting.

How to install safely with a torque driver
- Identify the platform. Find the exact server or motherboard model and open its service manual.
- Match the instruction to the part. Check whether the specified torque applies to the socket retention frame, heat sink, or cold plate; these assemblies can have different requirements.
- Set up the tool. Fit a T20 bit if required, then set the calibrated driver to the manual’s stated value in the specified units.
- Start screws by hand. Engage them without forcing or cross-threading, then use the driver to tighten.
- Follow the OEM sequence. Tighten in the order and pattern in the manual. For the cited HPE cold-plate procedure, that means its specified 12-step sequence.
AMD’s XAPP1377, revision 2.0, published June 27, 2025, says that proper installation equipment controlling torque can prevent excessive pressure on the device. That supports using a torque-controlled tool, but it does not replace the torque and sequence in the platform maker’s instructions.

- Is the manual for the exact server or motherboard revision?
- Does the stated value apply to the component you are fastening?
- Does the driver cover that value within its rated working range?
- Does the manual specify units, a tightening sequence, or a particular pattern?
- Are you using the specified bit and following the tool maker’s instructions for setting and use?
If the documentation for your platform does not establish the torque, do not borrow a number from another SP5 system. Consult the system or motherboard manufacturer for the correct procedure.
