VRR lets the display adjust its refresh rate to the GPU’s frame rate, helping reduce tearing without relying on conventional V-Sync’s fixed-refresh behavior. If frame rates rise above the display’s refresh rate or VRR range, a frame-rate cap or a vendor-specific sync setting may still be needed.
Why look for an alternative to V-Sync?
Screen tearing happens when a display shows parts of different frames at once. Conventional V-Sync can prevent that by coordinating frame presentation with the display’s refresh cycle, but it can add input delay. NVIDIA explains the tearing and latency trade-off in its guide to why high FPS matters for esports.
The right alternative depends on whether you prioritize tear-free output, low input latency, or smooth behavior when the game’s frame rate changes. VRR is the first option to check; frame caps and vendor-specific sync features address situations VRR alone does not cover.
Use FreeSync or G-SYNC if your setup supports VRR
VRR changes the display’s refresh rate in relation to the graphics card’s frame rate. AMD describes FreeSync as synchronizing a compatible display’s refresh rate with a compatible graphics card’s frame rate. NVIDIA says G-SYNC matches a monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU’s frame rate, and requires a G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible display. See AMD’s FreeSync technology page and NVIDIA’s G-SYNC compatibility information.

FreeSync and G-SYNC are not universal software fixes: both depend on compatible display and graphics hardware. Check the monitor’s stated VRR range and confirm that your GPU, display connection, and game setup support the feature.
Enable VRR on both the display and the computer
- Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and enable its FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync, or VRR setting, as named by the manufacturer.
- Open the graphics software for your GPU and enable the matching VRR feature. AMD’s recommended FreeSync setup calls for enabling it in both the monitor settings and AMD software.
- Start a game and check whether VRR is active. If the option is missing, verify the monitor model, GPU support, connection, and monitor OSD setting before assuming the feature is unavailable.
What to do when frame rates exceed the refresh rate or VRR range
VRR works within the usable range supported by the display. When FPS regularly exceeds the display’s refresh rate, AMD recommends enabling V-Sync or capping the frame rate. A cap can keep performance from repeatedly running beyond the display’s refresh ceiling, but the appropriate cap depends on the specific monitor and game; there is no universal number established by the cited guidance.

For NVIDIA systems, the company’s latency guide discusses combining G-SYNC with V-Sync and Reflex or Ultra Low Latency Mode for players who want to avoid tearing. NVIDIA notes that this can add slightly more latency than uncapped Reflex. Consult its system-latency guide and follow the settings relevant to your game rather than treating this as a universal configuration.
Other sync options, and when they fit
| Option | When it fits | Trade-off or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| FreeSync or G-SYNC VRR | Your GPU and display support a compatible VRR mode. | Enable it in the display and graphics settings; check the usable VRR range and device compatibility. |
| Frame-rate cap | FPS regularly exceeds the display’s refresh rate or VRR range. | Set a cap for the specific display and game; the cited sources do not establish one universal cap. |
| V-Sync with G-SYNC and Reflex or Ultra Low Latency Mode | You use an NVIDIA setup and want a configuration aimed at avoiding tearing. | NVIDIA says it can add slightly more latency than uncapped Reflex; behavior can vary by game. |
| AMD Enhanced Sync | You have a supported Radeon system and frame rates exceed the display’s refresh rate. | It is an AMD feature with API and hardware constraints, not a universal cross-platform setting. See AMD’s Enhanced Sync documentation. |
| NVIDIA Adaptive VSync | You have a supported GeForce setup where frame rate crosses above and below the refresh cap. | It dynamically toggles V-Sync to address the stutter/tearing trade-off around the refresh cap; it is a driver setting. See NVIDIA’s Adaptive VSync explanation. |
Choose based on your display and priorities
- You have compatible VRR hardware: Enable FreeSync or G-SYNC first, then check behavior across the game’s frame-rate range.
- Your frame rate often exceeds refresh or VRR range: Try a game or driver frame-rate cap; AMD also recommends V-Sync in this situation.
- You want to eliminate tearing on an NVIDIA setup: Follow NVIDIA’s G-SYNC, V-Sync, and Reflex guidance, keeping its latency trade-off in mind.
- Your system is outside VRR compatibility: Vendor-specific options such as Enhanced Sync or Adaptive VSync may help if your hardware supports them; otherwise conventional V-Sync remains an available option if eliminating tearing matters more than minimizing input delay.
AMD’s FreeSync page summarizes its goal this way: “With AMD FreeSync technology, the refresh rate of a display is synchronized with the framerate of FreeSync compatible graphics cards, reducing or eliminating visual artifacts that many users are especially sensitive to, like input latency, screen tearing, and stuttering during gaming and video playback.” This is a vendor feature description, not an independent comparative test, so it does not establish one universally lowest-latency mode.
