Before paying for a used PS5 Pro, verify that the exact console displays a stable picture, its ports and controller work, it can connect to PlayStation services, and the seller can hand it over with a clean reset. Check the serial number and physical condition, confirm what optional accessories are actually included, and do not treat a successful test as a guarantee against future service or warranty problems.
Before the meetup: set up a real test
Ask the seller to demonstrate the console before you meet. Sony recommends a video showing the ports, buttons, any disc drive, power-on and internet connection. Use that only as an initial screen: repeat the checks yourself at the meetup, on the unit you are buying. Bring or arrange a display, an HDMI cable if needed, and a suitable USB device or cable to check the ports.
Agree in advance that you will have enough time to power on the console, connect it to the internet, launch a game and inspect any accessories advertised as part of the bundle. Sony does not specify a required test duration, so do not mistake a brief successful power-on for a full condition check.
Inspect the console and verify its identity
- Look over the case for impact damage and other visible signs of rough handling.
- Make sure the serial number is present and readable. Sony specifically flags a removed serial number as a reason for concern.
- Check for signs of tampering, including a broken warranty seal.
- Look at the buttons and connectors for obvious damage before connecting anything.
Sony’s US buying guide recommends checking for damage, intact seals and a readable serial number. If the unit’s identity is missing or its condition raises concern, do not proceed on the assumption that a later repair or claim will be straightforward.

Display output and ports
Connect the PS5 Pro to a display and confirm that it produces a stable picture. Test the USB ports with a suitable cable or device. Sony advises checking all ports; a device that does not work is not conclusive evidence of a faulty port unless it is known to be compatible.
The PS5 Pro safety guide lists two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, HDMI OUT, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. These are specifications, not proof that a particular used unit is functioning. Test the connections you expect to use, especially HDMI and any port relevant to your setup.

Internet and PlayStation services
Connect the console to the internet and check that it can access PlayStation services. Sony warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. A successful connection during the meetup is a useful check, but it cannot guarantee that there will be no later account or service issue.
Game, image, sound and heat
Launch a game and check its picture and sound. Watch for unexpected shutdowns or signs of abnormal heat while it runs. Sony advises buyers to check image quality and overheating, but does not define a minimum number of minutes for an in-person test. If the seller will not allow a meaningful demonstration, factor that uncertainty into your decision or walk away.

Check the controller and advertised bundle
DualSense controller
Test the included controller’s sticks, buttons and triggers. Confirm that it connects wirelessly and charges. Sony lists a DualSense wireless controller among the PS5 Pro contents, but its official buying guidance does not define a stick-drift test procedure; move each stick through its range and check in a game or menu for unwanted movement.
Disc drive and stand
The PS5 Pro is an all-digital console with no built-in disc drive. Sony sells a compatible drive separately and says an internet connection is required to pair it with the console during setup. If a physical drive is included in the seller’s offer, test that specific drive and confirm it is included in the agreed price. Without an attached drive, you cannot test the console with a physical game disc.

- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
The vertical stand is also sold separately. Do not assume either accessory is included just because it appears in a listing photo; establish exactly what the seller is handing over.
Use Sony’s contents list as a reference
Sony’s US product page lists the following with a new PS5 Pro. A used bundle may differ, so use this list to clarify the seller’s offer rather than treating every item as a condition of purchase.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Complete the handover safely
Keep testing separate from the final account handover. First confirm the console’s operation and online access. If you decide to buy it, have the seller deactivate their access and reset the console before you leave.
- Agree on the sale only after you have completed the functional checks.
- Ask the seller to deactivate the console and ensure they no longer have access, as Sony recommends.
- Have the seller reset the console for the handover. A PS5 reset deletes user and game data and cannot be undone, so do not start it before both parties are ready to complete the transaction.
- Do not confuse a reset with “Restore Default Settings.” Sony says restoring default settings does not erase user or game data. See Sony’s reset and default-settings guidance for the distinction.
Check warranty, seller protections and price separately
Sony says third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by warranty; its guide notes certified refurbished products as an exception. Ask for the original proof of purchase and verify any remaining coverage directly with Sony for your region. Do not assume that warranty coverage transfers because the seller says it does. Warranty and consumer rights depend on geography, and the product details cited here are US-specific.
When comparing offers, consider the demonstrated working condition, physical condition and serial label, demonstrated service access, seller deactivation and clean reset, controller condition, included drive or stand, proof of purchase, stated warranty terms, and return or buyer-protection rules available in your region. These checks help compare risk; they do not establish a current local market price. Compare current local listings before deciding whether an asking price is attractive.
