Pack a standard roadside emergency kit, then add rain gear you can reach without unloading the car: a poncho or raincoat, gloves, and a tarp. Keep a charged phone and charger, first aid, a flashlight, signaling supplies, vehicle basics, and provisions for waiting nearby. Most importantly, never drive through floodwater; a well-stocked kit cannot make that safe.
Rainy-weather car emergency kit checklist
Store essentials so you can get to them during a roadside stop. Keep rain gear, a light, and your phone especially easy to reach; burying them under luggage defeats their purpose when it is wet or dark.
Reach quickly during a stop
- Charged cell phone and charger: A car charger helps keep the phone powered; a charged backup battery is another option if it fits your setup. See the NHTSA’s road-trip kit guidance.
- Rain protection: Pack a rain poncho or raincoat, gloves, and a tarp. AAA recommends these rain-ready additions, and the American Red Cross vehicle kit guidance includes a rain poncho.
- Light and signaling: Bring a flashlight and an appropriate roadside signal, such as flares, a white flag, or reflective triangles. Choose equipment you can use safely, and follow local rules.
- First-aid kit: Keep basic first aid available for minor injuries while you wait for help.
Vehicle and roadside basics
- Jumper cables for a battery problem.
- Tire-pressure gauge and tire equipment: Include the vehicle’s jack and ground mat, and check whether it has a usable spare. Learn the vehicle-specific procedure before you need it.
- Basic repair tools and duct tape: Use them only for repairs you can perform safely and competently.
- Emergency signals: Keep them accessible, but deploy them only when conditions make it safe to do so.
Supplies for waiting
- Drinking water and nonperishable food.
- Needed medicines, an emergency blanket, towels, and coats or extra clothes.
- For highway travel, consider an emergency contact card and a small battery-operated radio, as suggested by the Red Cross highway-safety guidance.
- Account for every occupant, including children and pets, when deciding how much food, water, clothing, and medication to carry.
What to do if rain leaves you stranded
Before and during the drive
Rain makes a vehicle harder to control or stop on slick roads. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises driving slowly and increasing following distance. Check weather and route conditions before setting out, and do not let the presence of emergency supplies encourage you to take a hazardous route.

If the road is flooded
Do not drive through floodwater. NHTSA says to turn around when a road is flooded or blocked. A kit is for dealing with a breakdown or delay; it cannot protect a vehicle or its occupants from rushing water.

If your vehicle breaks down
AAA’s roadside emergency guidance recommends pulling as far to the right as possible, then staying inside the vehicle with your seat belt fastened and hazard lights flashing. Treat this as general guidance rather than an absolute rule: traffic, road layout, and your immediate personal safety matter. Use roadside signals only when it is safe to do so.

Choose supplies according to how long you will be out, the vehicle’s equipment, local climate, storage space, and the needs of everyone travelling with you. Before a trip, check that items are present, usable, and reachable; AAA also recommends keeping a car emergency kit maintained.
