Choose quantum error-correction (QEC) software by matching it to the lab’s code family, circuit operations, noise model, decoder assumptions, and hardware workflow—not by relying on a general speed or feature claim. Then test the leading candidates on the same representative experiment and verify that their dependencies, outputs, and maintenance fit a reproducible research pipeline.
Start with the experiment, not the software list
Before comparing packages, write down what the lab needs to model and measure. QEC software may cover different parts of a workflow: circuit simulation, noise sampling, detector-error-model generation, decoding, or hardware execution and analysis. A package that handles one part well may need to be combined with other tools.
- Code and circuit: Specify the code family, circuit structure, number of rounds, operations, and observables you need to study.
- Noise: List the error mechanisms and parameters the experiment requires, including whether they come from a simplified model or device calibration.
- Decoder: State which decoding algorithms and inputs you need, and whether the decoder must support online feedback or only offline analysis.
- Scale and execution: Define the circuit size, sampling volume or statistical precision, available CPU/GPU resources, and acceptable runtime.
- Workflow: Identify required SDKs, hardware access, data formats, and reproducibility or deployment constraints.
These requirements turn a long feature list into a set of pass-or-fail checks. In particular, confirm that the simulator represents the physics and circuit operations relevant to the experiment; a fast result for a different model is not a useful comparison.
Compare the options by their documented roles
| Option | Documented role | Why evaluate it | Check before adoption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stim | Fast stabilizer-circuit simulation and analysis, including detector error models. | Useful building blocks for QEC circuit sampling and stabilizer research. | Its documented circuit interface is limited to stabilizer operations and Pauli noise channels; it is not a direct fit for every operation or noise model. |
| PyMatching with Stim/Sinter | Matching-based decoding from graphs, check matrices, and Stim detector error models; Sinter supports parallel Monte Carlo workflows. | Evaluate for matching-decoder studies, including graphlike models and surface-code-style examples. | Check whether the experiment’s error mechanisms can be represented in the graphlike form required by the selected workflow. |
| CUDA-Q QEC | Examples cover detector-error-model parsing, decoder construction, multi-round checks, circuit-level noise sampling, and CPU/GPU paths. | Consider it when its interfaces or compute paths fit the lab’s stack. | Verify current platform and algorithm support, then validate outputs on the lab’s own circuits. |
| Qiskit QEC | A modular framework described for QEC circuits, codes, decoders, noise, and analysis. | Worth assessing where the lab’s work already uses Qiskit concepts and benefits from those abstractions. | Check current maintenance and installation route; ecosystem metadata marks it as an alumni project and says it is not published to a package registry. |
| qec_code_sim | A research-oriented Python framework for QEC protocol studies with realistic error models focused on superconducting transmon qubits. | May suit learning, portability, or modifying device-oriented examples. | Assess whether its model scope and execution priorities match the project; its authors report desktop-friendly studies up to ~12 qubits, not a general limit for QEC software. |
These descriptions establish reasons to evaluate each option, not a performance ranking. No common-workload benchmark across these packages is established by the cited sources.

Check whether the simulator represents your physics
Match operations and noise to the circuit interface
Stim is designed for stabilizer circuits and emphasizes speed. Its project documentation identifies the lack of non-Clifford operations such as T or Toffoli gates and describes Pauli noise-channel support in its circuit interface. If an experiment needs those operations or non-Pauli mechanisms such as amplitude decay, test whether a different simulator or a validated approximation is required; do not assume the simulator represents noise simply because it accepts a circuit.
Separate an example model from device validation
The qec_code_sim paper focuses on QEC protocols under realistic error models for superconducting transmon qubits, with device-matched parameters discussed as part of its approach. That scope does not establish that an example parameter set matches a particular lab’s device. Compare any supplied or published model with the lab’s own calibration data before using it to support hardware-specific conclusions.

Verify the decoder’s assumptions and data flow
A decoder is only as useful as the representation it receives. In the documented Stim-to-PyMatching circuit workflow, Stim generates a detector error model and decomposes mechanisms into edge-like errors so the model is graphlike and can be loaded by the matching decoder. The lab should check that this conversion preserves the mechanisms and correlations that matter to its experiment, rather than treating successful parsing as proof that the model is appropriate.
CUDA-Q QEC documentation offers a different set of interoperability examples, including decoding from Stim detector-error-model text, constructing multi-round parity-check matrices, circuit-level noise sampling, and CPU/GPU routes. Those examples show possible interfaces; they do not establish equivalent coverage or results across all decoders, codes, and circuits. For any candidate, run the same target circuit through the intended simulation-to-decoder path and compare logical-observable predictions.

For parallel Monte Carlo workflows using Stim and PyMatching, the PyMatching documentation recommends Sinter. Include that orchestration layer in the evaluation if it is part of the lab’s intended workflow, rather than comparing only the decoder in isolation.
Benchmark on a representative workload
Project statements about speed or scale do not substitute for a lab-specific benchmark. Stim presents performance as a design goal for stabilizer simulation; qec_code_sim prioritizes portability, extensibility, and learning over execution speed. These are different design choices, not directly comparable measurements. The qec_code_sim paper’s “up to ~12 qubits” figure describes its reported desktop-friendly studies, not a universal capacity boundary.

Keep the comparison fair
- Choose one representative experiment. Use the same code, circuit, rounds, noise model, decoder objective, and observable for each candidate.
- Fix the amount of work. Hold shot count or target statistical precision constant, and document any differences in how packages define or achieve that target.
- Use the same environment where possible. Record machine, processor, memory, software versions, dependencies, and whether CPU, GPU, or parallel execution was enabled.
- Measure practical costs. Record wall-clock time, peak memory, installation effort, and the work needed to convert inputs or outputs between tools.
- Check scientific agreement. Compare logical-observable predictions and investigate discrepancies before interpreting runtime or scaling differences.
- Save the full setup. Preserve circuit and model files, configuration, seeds where applicable, command or script, version information, and output format so the result can be reproduced.
This comparison answers a more useful question than “Which package is fastest?”: which complete workflow can produce the required result, at the lab’s target scale, with acceptable cost and repeatability?

Assess support and reproducibility
Documentation can describe a project’s design goals without establishing its current support status. The Qiskit QEC tutorial describes a modular, open-source framework and discusses installation and real-system QEC programs. The separate Qiskit Ecosystem classifications entry, dated 2025-01-27, lists Qiskit QEC as an “Alumni” project and says it is not published to a package registry. Before adopting it—or any other candidate—inspect current repository activity, releases, dependency compatibility, issue response, licensing, and who will maintain the lab’s installation.

For a reproducible pipeline, also confirm that the software exposes stable inputs and outputs suitable for archiving, and that your team can preserve the exact version and environment used for a result. A convenient tutorial is not by itself evidence of an ongoing support commitment.
Test the whole hardware loop if experiments use devices
Hardware work adds requirements a simulator-only evaluation can miss. Test circuit construction, dynamic control flow, calibration-derived noise, measurement-data handling, and export into the lab’s analysis pipeline. If online correction or feedback is required, measure decoder latency in the actual control path. The cited Qiskit tutorial discusses running QEC programs on real systems, while qec_code_sim discusses device-matched noise parameters; neither establishes current compatibility with every provider or device. Confirm access and compatibility against the exact hardware stack the lab plans to use.
Make the decision with explicit pass/fail gates
A practical shortlisting process is to eliminate any package that fails a required circuit or noise-model check, then test decoder interoperability and representative-scale performance on the remaining options. Among those that meet the scientific requirements, compare maintainability, installation burden, integration, and reproducibility. Keep separate tools when they perform distinct jobs well, but document each conversion and verify that it does not change the model or interpretation.
Choose the workflow that meets the experiment’s requirements and can be validated and maintained by the lab—not the option with the broadest description or most impressive unqualified speed claim.
