Wired models avoid charging but leave a cable beside the bed; Bluetooth models remove that cable but need power. If you mainly listen to speech, check for listening reports and a usable return policy: one review found a specific model’s spoken audio muffled, despite its usefulness for ambient sound.
Start with the audio source and connection
Before comparing features, check the output on the phone, radio, TV, or other device you plan to use. A speaker’s plug may not match your source, and a connector adapter may be required.
- 3.5 mm: SANGEAN says its PS-300 and PS-100 work with devices that have a 3.5 mm headphone output. Confirm that your device actually has that output.
- USB-C: Avantree lists USB-C connectivity for the Slumber B. Its product page says older iPhones may need a Lightning adapter; check the exact phone and adapter combination before ordering.
- Bluetooth: A Bluetooth model can play wirelessly from a compatible source, but it relies on a charged battery. The Pillowsonic Symphony is described by its maker as Bluetooth V5.
Do not assume that “wireless” means the speaker has every audio feature built in. Check whether the product streams from your device, plays stored audio, or supports a wired external source.
Choose wired or wireless power deliberately
A wired speaker is a good fit if you want to avoid charging and can manage a cable near the bed. Avantree says the Slumber B is USB-C powered and requires no charging; its listed cable is 1.2 m long. SANGEAN’s PS-100 listing gives a 2,000 mm cable length. Check whether the cable can reach your source without crossing a walkway or becoming awkward while you sleep.

Bluetooth offers freedom from a direct audio cable, but battery life is a model-specific claim, not a category guarantee. Pillowsonic lists up to six hours of continuous playback for the Symphony controller. The Jabees PEACE Duo review by Tom’s Guide reports USB-C charging and up to 10 hours for that model. Confirm current specifications and consider whether the product’s timer or charging routine suits your nightly use.
Match the design to your pillow and sleeping position
Find out where the speaker is meant to sit—inside a pillowcase, under the pillow, or in another position—and check its size and shape against your pillow. Thickness and material can change how sound comes through, while a speaker that presses against the ear may be uncomfortable for some sleepers.
In its review of the Jabees PEACE Duo, Tom’s Guide reported that audibility varied by pillow and position: the reviewer found it worked with feather/down, polyester, and cotton pillows, but not thick foam pillows, and noted a limitation for back sleeping. Those observations apply to that reviewed unit, not every pillow speaker. If possible, check the return terms before buying so you can assess fit at home.
Buy for the kind of audio you actually hear
Ambient sound, music, podcasts, and spoken sleep stories place different demands on a small speaker tucked into or beneath bedding. Tom’s Guide found the Jabees PEACE Duo more suitable for ambient sounds than guided meditation or sleep stories because speech sounded muffled. That is a model-specific review finding, but it illustrates why broad claims about sleep audio do not establish clear speech reproduction.
If you plan to listen to dialogue, look for independent listening reports that address speech clarity and check the return policy. For ambient noise, a sound that is less crisp may be acceptable, depending on your preference. The available sources do not establish a standardized head-to-head test or measured sound-leakage comparison across these products.
Compare the controls and playback features
Controls matter when you want to adjust audio without picking up a phone. Check their location and whether you can reach them from bed. Features vary by model:
- In-line controls: Avantree lists in-line volume and mono/stereo controls for the Slumber B. SANGEAN lists in-line volume control and an on/off built-in amplifier for the PS-300.
- Phone-free playback: Pillowsonic describes the Symphony as having an integrated player, a 1 GB memory card, expandable memory up to 8 GB, a sleep timer, and headphone and external-source ports. These are the manufacturer’s specifications for that system.
- Stored audio and timer: Tom’s Guide reports that the Jabees PEACE Duo supports Micro SD playback and timers. Check the current product listing for the precise formats and timer options if these features are important.
Also check whether the controls are easy to find in low light and whether a timer is available if you do not want audio playing all night.

Check returns, care, and safety notes
Before buying, read the seller’s current return terms and the maker’s warranty and care instructions. Pillow speakers sit close to bedding and may need cleaning; confirm whether a cover is washable and whether replacement parts are available. Avantree’s product page lists returns, warranty information, and spare parts, but terms can change, so verify them at purchase.
Keep volume comfortable and follow the product’s instructions. The available sources do not establish a general consumer hearing-exposure threshold specific to pillow speakers, so they do not support a numeric safe-volume rule. These products are described as listening devices, not as clinically demonstrated treatments for insomnia or other conditions.
A separate caution appears in LG Electronics’ hospital-TV setup documentation, which concerns a specialized pillow-speaker pendant control used around oxygen equipment: “Caution: Use a pillow speaker that is a UL recognized pendant control bearing the warning: ‘Risk of fire if used in oxygen enriched atmosphere. Keep pendant control away from oxygen equipment.’” This is a warning for that hospital interface context; it should not be generalized into a claim that ordinary consumer pillow speakers pose the same hazard.
