Before buying a Chromebook, check the automatic update end date for the exact model—not just its product-family name. Google’s current policy provides ChromeOS devices with up to 10 years of automatic updates from the platform release date, so a model’s remaining support depends on when that platform was released, not when you buy it. For some eligible Chromebooks released before 2021, extended updates also involve an opt-in and remove Google Play Store and Android app support.
Check how long the exact Chromebook will receive updates
Google says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of automatic updates measured from the platform release date. That is not 10 years from the date you purchase the device, and a retail launch or end-of-sale date is not the support clock. The remaining time can therefore differ significantly between two Chromebooks bought on the same day.
Use Google’s Auto Update policy and device schedule to find the exact model and its “Automatic updates until” date. Google’s schedule is model-specific, and some entries have an asterisk indicating extended-update handling; check the listing and the specific model or platform variant rather than assuming every model in a product family has the same terms.
If you already have the device in hand, Google says you can check the date on the Chromebook at Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule. The date shown is when that device receives its last update. Google also explains how to check update information in its guide to updating your Chromebook’s operating system.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Use the end date to judge the purchase
Compare the model’s update end date with how long you expect to use it. This is a buyer’s decision, not a minimum period Google requires: someone replacing a device soon may accept less remaining support than someone choosing a Chromebook for years of use. A low price or a recent store listing does not by itself establish a long update runway.
- Identify the exact model. Record the full model name and, where available, its platform or model variant.
- Look up its official date. Find the model in Google’s current schedule and note “Automatic updates until.”
- Check the device itself when possible. In Settings, open About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule and confirm the displayed final-update date.
- Compare support time with your plans. Decide whether the remaining update period suits your intended ownership period.
- For eligible pre-2021 devices, check extended-update conditions. Confirm whether the model requires opt-in and whether its feature exclusions would affect your use.
Understand the trade-offs for some older Chromebooks
Google says eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can receive extended updates for a total of 10 years from the platform release date. Some older models require the owner to opt in. Extended updates include continued security, performance, and stability improvements, but Google’s consumer guidance says they do not include Google Play Store or Android app support. Check the exact model’s eligibility and schedule in Google’s extended updates support information before buying an older device, especially if Android apps matter to you.

The extension should not be treated as a blanket promise for every older Chromebook. The model’s entry and any opt-in terms determine what applies; confirm those details before relying on a longer support period.
What happens after the final software update?
Google Chromebook Help says: “If you get a ‘Final software update’ notification, your device won’t receive ChromeOS and browser updates anymore.” Those updates include security updates, bug fixes, and new features. Google cautions that existing features may stop working and some apps require a newer ChromeOS or browser version.

Reaching the final update does not mean the Chromebook immediately stops working: Google says you can continue using an old Chromebook, but it will not receive further software updates. Consider that distinction when deciding whether a device with little support time left is suitable for the tasks you need it to perform.

The update schedule answers how long Google lists a model for automatic updates; it does not tell you whether its hardware suits your workload. Evaluate the exact device separately for processor performance, memory, storage, battery condition, display, keyboard, and ports. Those characteristics and current prices vary by model and configuration, so an update date alone cannot establish which Chromebook is the better value.
