For a budget air purifier, start with the room’s floor area and the purifier’s smoke CADR—not its broadest advertised coverage claim. Then check that its filter matches the pollutant you care about, its useful operating speed is tolerable, and replacement filters and electricity fit your budget. A low purchase price is poor value if the unit cannot clean your space at a speed you will actually use.

1. Size the purifier to your room

Measure the room’s length and width, then multiply them to get its area in square feet. For an open floor plan, count the whole connected area the purifier is expected to serve. A room with ceilings higher than eight feet may need a larger unit because it contains more air.

CADR, or Clean Air Delivery Rate, estimates how quickly a purifier delivers filtered air. For particle cleaning, a higher CADR generally means more air cleaned or a larger area served. Compare the smoke CADR with your room size: smoke is the most conservative of the common particle ratings and is especially useful when fine particles are a concern.

Room area Estimated minimum CADR
100 sq. ft. 65 cfm
200 sq. ft. 130 cfm
300 sq. ft. 195 cfm
400 sq. ft. 260 cfm
500 sq. ft. 325 cfm
600 sq. ft. 390 cfm

These are ENERGY STAR sizing estimates for rooms with eight-foot ceilings, not guarantees that a particular model will achieve that performance at a quieter setting. ENERGY STAR’s buying guidance explains the estimate. For another quick check, AHAM’s general rule is smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area: a 10-by-12-foot room (120 sq. ft.) calls for at least 80 cfm. AHAM advises sizing up for ceilings above eight feet. For wildfire smoke, AHAM recommends smoke CADR equal to the room’s area; that is a more conservative target than EPA’s two-thirds guidance. See AHAM’s selection tips and EPA’s wildfire filtration guidance.

Check the speed behind the published rating. CADR is typically measured at the purifier’s highest fan speed, which may be louder than the setting you prefer to run. EPA recommends matching the unit to the room and considering its noise at the speed you can tolerate. Its guide uses about 50 dB as a rough reference comparable to a modern refrigerator’s operating noise, not as a guarantee that any purifier will sound quiet. EPA’s home guide also notes that higher fan speeds and longer runtimes filter more air.

2. Match the filter to the pollution

Particles: smoke, dust, pollen and some airborne biological particles

For particles, look for a HEPA filter or a clear, verifiable particle-performance claim. Compare the CADR category that fits your concern: smoke for fine particles and smoke, or pollen and dust ratings when those are the main issue. CADR measures particle cleaning, not gas or odor removal.

If your concern is respiratory viruses, EPA advises choosing a properly room-sized cleaner with a high smoke CADR, a HEPA designation, or a stated capability for particles in the 0.1–1 micrometer range. An air cleaner can reduce airborne particles, but do not treat it as a guarantee against infection. See EPA’s guidance on air cleaners and respiratory viruses.

Gases and odors: check for substantial carbon

Odors and many gases, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), need a different filter medium. Look for activated carbon or another absorbent designed for gases, and check how much material the filter contains: EPA says carbon can be effective when a large amount is used. There is no widely used performance-rating system for gas removal in portable air cleaners, so a high CADR alone does not substantiate an odor or gas-removal claim.

Mold: filtration does not fix moisture

A purifier may capture some mold-related particles, but it does not stop mold growth if moisture remains. Fix the moisture problem and clean up mold; an air purifier is not a substitute. EPA covers this distinction in its home air-cleaner guide.

3. Verify performance and check ozone-related safety

Before buying, search the AHAM Verifide directory for the model. It lists independently verified models and lets you search by certified CADR, suggested room size, manufacturer and brand. This is more useful than relying on a large coverage figure without a clear test basis.

Do not look for an “EPA-certified” purifier: EPA says it does not certify or register air-cleaning devices and does not recommend particular devices or manufacturers. That is separate from a government agency issuing general indoor-air guidance; it is not a product endorsement. See EPA’s clarification.

Avoid portable air cleaners designed to intentionally produce ozone. Ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, some UV devices and plasma cleaners may emit it. EPA points consumers to CARB and AHAM lists for devices tested to emit little or no ozone; if considering bipolar ionization, EPA recommends a device certified to UL 2998 for zero ozone emissions. Look for the device’s actual ozone information rather than assuming a technology is safe because it appears in a feature list. Details are in EPA’s home guide and its virus guidance.

4. Calculate the cost to own, not just the price to buy

Before choosing the cheapest unit, find its replacement-filter model number, current price and availability. A low-priced purifier can cost more to keep running if its filters are expensive, hard to find or need frequent replacement. Check the manufacturer’s replacement guidance for the specific model rather than assuming all filters last the same length of time.

Include electricity and operating noise in the comparison. A purifier that is only tolerable on its lowest setting may deliver less cleaning than its maximum CADR suggests. ENERGY STAR can help compare energy efficiency, but it does not rate cleaning effectiveness. The current room air cleaner specification took effect October 9, 2025, and uses an Integrated Energy Factor based on CADR-to-watt efficiency. Its criteria also require reporting filter type, replacement-filter model number, CADR, power and ozone emissions. See ENERGY STAR’s buying guidance and its product criteria.

  • Smoke CADR matched to your room area and ceiling height
  • Particle rating and filter type suited to your main concern
  • Independent performance verification and ozone information
  • Noise at a fan speed you can live with
  • Replacement-filter model, cost and availability
  • Energy efficiency for the runtime you expect

5. Consider a DIY box-fan cleaner only with its limits in mind

A box fan fitted with furnace filters can reduce particles when it is well built, but results vary with the fan, filter, design, construction and maintenance. Its CADR is often unknown, so it is difficult to confirm that it will serve a particular room as predictably as a commercially rated purifier. More or thicker filters and a shroud can improve a DIY design, but they do not establish a verified room-size rating. EPA explains the trade-offs in its DIY air-cleaner guidance. Choose a commercial unit with known CADR when predictable room coverage matters.
