Choose an Android note app by checking what stays on your device, what you can search, how offline edits sync, and who can decrypt any cloud copy. “Offline,” “syncs,” and “encrypted” describe different things: verify them separately for notes and attachments before trusting an app with important or sensitive information.
Start with the storage and sync model
First decide whether you want notes saved as local files, held in an app’s storage, or synchronized through a service. Those choices affect access across devices, what happens when you uninstall an app, and which company or provider handles a remote copy.
- Local-first: Notes are stored on the device by default. This can offer direct file control, but local storage alone does not establish that files are encrypted at rest or backed up.
- Cloud-connected: Notes can sync across devices through an account or storage provider. Check what is synchronized, which provider receives the data, and whether access depends on an internet connection.
- Hybrid: An app may keep local copies and sync them remotely. Confirm which notes and attachments are actually downloaded and what happens to edits made while offline.
For example, Obsidian describes its vault notes as local by default, while Standard Notes says its mobile apps can create, read, and edit notes offline and sync changes after reconnecting. Google Keep says files selected for offline access are stored on the device. These are different implementations, not interchangeable guarantees. [Obsidian for Android; Standard Notes; Google Keep Help]
Test offline access before you need it
An app can support syncing without making every note or attachment available offline. Test on the Android device you plan to use, with both Wi-Fi and mobile data disabled. Include recent edits and any files, images, or other attachments that matter to your workflow.

- Open several existing notes while connected, including notes with attachments.
- Disable Wi-Fi and mobile data, then reopen those notes and attachments.
- Create a new note and edit an existing one while offline.
- Reconnect and check that the changes appear on any other device you use.
For Google Keep, Google says users can choose files to access offline and that those files are stored on the device. Standard Notes says its mobile apps can create, read, and edit notes offline, then sync changes after reconnection. For either service, confirm the behavior that matters to you instead of assuming every item in your account is cached locally. [Google Keep Help; Standard Notes]
Check what search can actually find
Search features vary in scope. Before choosing an app, check whether search covers the content you rely on: note titles and text, tags, checklist items, attachments, handwriting, or text recognized from images. Official feature descriptions do not provide a consistent, like-for-like comparison of search quality across the apps discussed here, so an app’s search button alone is not evidence that it indexes every content type you need.

Try representative searches in a sample notebook: a word in a title, a phrase in the note body, a tag, and—if relevant—text in a handwritten note or attachment. Also consider privacy: Google says it processes Keep content for features including category search and handwriting recognition. Google also says Keep content is not used for advertising, and describes files as encrypted in transit and at rest. These are Google’s statements about its service, not an independent privacy audit or a claim of end-to-end encryption. [Google Keep Help]
Understand what “encrypted” means
Encryption claims should answer two separate questions: what protection applies to data sent to or stored by a service, and whether the provider can decrypt the synchronized content. Encryption in transit protects data as it moves; encryption at rest applies to stored data. Neither phrase alone means the provider cannot access the content.

Obsidian distinguishes its standard Sync encryption, which uses a key managed by Obsidian and can be used to decrypt remote data, from end-to-end encryption, which the company says prevents it from reading the synced data. Obsidian also says its Sync encryption does not encrypt the local vault itself. Keep local-device protection and remote-sync protection as separate checks. [Obsidian Sync security]
Standard Notes describes encrypted sync and local key derivation on its product page. Treat these as the provider’s claims, and check current product details and requirements before relying on a particular setup. [Standard Notes]

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Evaluate sync setup and provider dependence
Sync can simplify cross-device access, but the method matters. An app’s own sync service, a third-party cloud provider, and file-based synchronization can have different setup requirements and failure modes.

- Obsidian: Its sync guide says OneDrive may not work well for Android vault syncing and recommends keeping vault files available offline when cloud providers might offload them. It describes Google Drive as not officially supported for vault sync. These are cautions to test a particular setup, not proof that every third-party configuration fails. [Obsidian cross-device sync]
- Microsoft OneNote: Microsoft says OneNote on Android syncs with OneDrive and offers a setting to sync only on Wi-Fi. Microsoft recommends moving and syncing notebooks through OneNote rather than file-based synchronization systems. The cited support information explains syncing, not a specific privacy or offline-encryption model. [Microsoft OneNote sync support]
- Joplin: Its privacy documentation says synchronization is disabled by default; when you choose a third-party provider, notes are sent to that account and that provider’s privacy policy applies. The app’s own privacy statements do not settle how a selected destination handles your data. [Joplin privacy documentation]
Check recovery and portability before building an archive
Privacy controls are useful only if you can recover your notes when you change devices, lose account access, or stop using an app. Before moving a large archive, find out what export formats are available and whether exported notes remain usable outside the app.
Google points users to Takeout for downloading account data. Obsidian warns that if you lose the password for end-to-end encryption, the company cannot recover the remote vault; it remains encrypted and unusable. An encryption setup that puts recovery entirely in your hands can protect confidentiality, but it also makes secure password management essential. [Google Keep Help; Obsidian Sync security]
Match the app to your priorities
| Priority | What to look for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Direct control of local files | A local-first model, such as Obsidian’s described default vault storage | Where the Android vault lives, whether files persist after uninstalling, and whether your device protects them |
| Convenient cross-device access | A documented sync service or supported provider | Which account stores remote copies, offline availability, Android setup limits, and conflict behavior |
| Sensitive notes | A clear explanation of encryption and key ownership | Whether protection is in transit, at rest, or end-to-end; whether local files are separately encrypted; and how recovery works |
| Fast retrieval | Search for the content types you actually use | Whether search covers titles, body text, tags, attachments, and handwriting, and how the app processes that content |
| Long-term portability | Practical export and account-recovery options | Export formats, readability outside the app, and whether encryption keys can be recovered |
There is no single best choice established by the product descriptions above: the services use different storage and sync models, and the sources do not compare search quality consistently. Verify current app versions, Android requirements, settings, and feature availability on the vendors’ pages before deciding.
