A retro look does not guarantee a camera bag will protect your gear. Check the shell, closures and seams; confirm there is padding on the base, lid and walls; and compare usable interior space with your actual camera kit. For wet conditions, look for protection at the openings as well as the fabric—and use a properly fitted rain cover when the bag’s construction does not match the exposure you expect.
Start with fit, not the style
Before comparing materials, measure the gear you plan to carry. Include the camera body with its usual lens attached, the longest additional lens, and any accessories that need their own space. Compare those measurements with the bag’s usable interior dimensions and the positions of its dividers. Leave room to remove equipment without forcing it past other items, and account for any pockets that reduce the main compartment’s usable space.
Published capacity is a useful reference, not a guarantee: combinations of camera bodies and lenses vary. For example, ONA publishes dimensions and a stated camera-and-lens capacity for its Brixton, while Think Tank notes that additional dividers can subdivide compartments in its Retrospective 10 V2. Check the dimensions against your own equipment rather than relying on a capacity label alone.

Retro-style bags may use materials such as waxed canvas and leather, but the material name and appearance do not establish how well a particular bag resists rain. Inspect the construction as a whole: the outer fabric and any coating or treatment, stitching, hardware, and the way the flap or zipper closes over the compartment.

ONA lists waxed canvas and full-grain Italian leather for the Brixton and describes weather resistance as enhanced by appropriately treating surfaces. That is a maker’s product description, not proof that the bag is waterproof. Treat similar claims as specific to the product and construction being described—not as a property shared by every canvas or leather bag.
Check the weak points
- Seams: Look for gaps or exposed stitching where water could enter.
- Closures: Check how zippers, clasps or other hardware secure the opening.
- Flap coverage: Consider whether the flap covers the opening beneath it, including at the sides.
- Base: Check the material and construction where the bag may rest on a wet surface.
Look for padding where the gear needs it
Check for padding on the base, lid and walls, not just a padded divider between items. Dividers should be adjustable or removable enough to separate your particular camera, lenses and accessories, and to stop equipment from striking other items as you move.

Manufacturer specifications illustrate different ways this can be described: Think Tank lists closed-cell foam and PE-board-reinforced dividers for the Retrospective 10 V2. Billingham says dense foam lines the internal walls, lid and base of the Hadley Digital. These are product descriptions, not independent comparative tests or a universal minimum padding thickness. Judge the coverage and arrangement for your own kit.

Water-repellent treatment, waterproof fabric and a protected opening are different things. A treated or coated shell may resist water, but that alone does not show that seams and openings are sealed. Read the maker’s wording for the specific bag and check how its flap, zipper or other closure protects the compartment.

Product descriptions show why the details matter. Think Tank lists durable water-repellent (DWR) and polyurethane coatings and includes a seam-sealed rain cover with the Retrospective 10 V2. Billingham describes the Hadley Digital’s fabric as three-layer waterproof material. ONA describes side weather flaps and treated-surface weather resistance for the Brixton. These are manufacturers’ specifications, not independent, like-for-like weather-test results; do not assume a protection level beyond what the maker states.
When a rain cover makes sense
If you expect sustained rain, uncertain exposure, or conditions the bag’s openings and seams are not designed to handle, check whether a rain cover is included or buy one sized for that model. A fitted cover adds another protective layer, but fit matters: confirm that it covers the bag as worn and does not leave access points exposed. Think Tank’s included seam-sealed cover is one example of this feature, not a specification common to every retro-style bag.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Measure your camera with its lens attached and the longest extra lens; compare the measurements with the usable interior.
- Check that dividers can be arranged to separate your actual gear.
- Confirm padding covers the base, lid and walls.
- Identify the shell material and any coating or treatment, then inspect seams, closures, flap coverage and base construction.
- Read weather claims narrowly: treatment or coating is not automatically the same as a waterproof bag.
- For wetter conditions, verify whether a model-specific rain cover is included or available, and check its fit.
