Choose a GPU for the specific path-traced game, resolution, and settings you want—not from a generic “ray-tracing capable” label. Compare performance in that game with the same image-quality features enabled, then check ray-tracing hardware, VRAM, software support, and whether the exact card fits your PC’s power and space limits.
Why path tracing demands more from a GPU
Path tracing simulates light as it bounces through a scene, accounting for indirect as well as direct lighting. It uses ray tracing as part of a broader light simulation, and can be substantially more demanding than a game’s limited ray-traced effects. NVIDIA notes that different ray-tracing techniques have different performance requirements; a card that runs reflections or shadows acceptably may deliver a very different result in a full path-tracing mode. NVIDIA Developer’s ray-tracing overview explains the distinction.
Start by confirming what the game actually offers. “Ray tracing” may mean selected effects, while “path tracing” or “full ray tracing” may describe a more comprehensive mode. The game, scene, resolution, quality preset, and reconstruction or frame-generation options all influence the workload. There is no universal minimum GPU that guarantees a particular path-traced experience.
Compare GPUs against your actual target
1. Match the game and rendering mode
Make a shortlist of the games you intend to play and check whether each has a path-tracing mode. Compare candidate cards using results for that mode—not a benchmark for conventional rendering or a lighter ray-tracing preset. Keep the settings consistent when comparing results.

- WINDFORCE Cooling System
- Hawk Fan
- Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel
- RGB Lighting
2. Set resolution, image quality, and frame-rate expectations
Decide whether you are targeting 1080p, 1440p, or 4K, and which quality settings matter to you. Look for game-specific performance at that resolution and with those settings. A result measured at a different resolution or with a different preset may not answer your buying question.
Also note whether a reported frame rate uses upscaling, ray reconstruction, or generated frames. These features can improve the displayed experience, but a number that includes generated frames is not the same as native rendering throughput. Compare like with like, and treat vendor examples as examples rather than universal rankings.

3. Check dedicated ray-tracing acceleration
Dedicated ray-tracing hardware is relevant because it can accelerate parts of the work. NVIDIA says its RT Cores accelerate bounding-volume hierarchy traversal and ray/triangle intersection calculations. Record the type or generation of acceleration when comparing cards, but do not assume that core count alone predicts performance: the game, implementation, settings, and the GPU as a whole also matter. NVIDIA Developer describes the role of this hardware.
4. Check VRAM and the exact card’s physical and power requirements
Consider memory capacity alongside the game and resolution you intend to use. Then check the specifications for the exact manufacturer and model you plan to buy: dimensions, power draw, required connectors, and recommended system power can differ between versions of the same GPU.

For a concrete reference, NVIDIA lists the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti with 16 GB of GDDR7, 300 W total graphics power, and a 750 W required system power in its reference-card specifications. The same page cautions that add-in-card manufacturers may use different specifications, so these figures should not be assumed for every RTX 5070 Ti model. See NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 family specifications.
5. Verify reconstruction and frame-generation support
Check which image-quality and frame-generation features the GPU supports, and whether the particular game implements them. These are distinct from the GPU’s native rendering performance. NVIDIA describes DLSS Super Resolution as image reconstruction and Ray Reconstruction as a feature for intensive ray-traced scenes; its support information differentiates features by GPU generation. NVIDIA’s DLSS overview provides its feature descriptions and support information.

Read the settings behind any performance claim. If a result uses upscaling or generated frames, identify that context rather than treating the displayed FPS as a count of conventionally rendered frames.
How to read vendor performance examples
Vendor figures can show what a particular combination of GPU, game, resolution, and features is intended to deliver, but they are not independent comparisons. NVIDIA reported up to 191 FPS at 2560×1440 and up to 149 FPS at 4K for the RTX 5070 Ti in Alan Wake 2, Black Myth: Wukong, and Cyberpunk 2077 with full ray tracing and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. Those are NVIDIA-reported results, not native-rendering results or independent test findings. NVIDIA’s announcement gives the stated context.

NVIDIA also reports PRAGMATA results using path tracing, Ray Reconstruction, Super Resolution, and Multi Frame Generation at several resolutions. In that game, NVIDIA says Ray Reconstruction is enabled automatically when path tracing is activated on GeForce RTX GPUs. Treat those figures as a game-specific vendor example: the features and settings materially shape the result, so it should not be used as a general ranking of GPUs. NVIDIA’s PRAGMATA announcement describes the configuration.

Before choosing between candidates, record the following for each one:
- Game and mode: Does the game offer path tracing or full ray tracing, and is the comparison for that mode?
- Resolution and settings: Do the results match your target resolution and image-quality settings?
- Performance method: Are upscaling, ray reconstruction, or frame generation enabled? Is the FPS figure native or inclusive of generated frames?
- Ray-tracing hardware: What dedicated acceleration does the card provide? Do not use a core count as a stand-in for game performance.
- VRAM and fit: How much memory does the exact card have, and will its dimensions, power draw, connectors, and system-power recommendation work in your PC?
- Feature support: Does the GPU generation support the reconstruction and frame-generation features used by your games?
- Price and evidence: Compare current local prices against independent benchmarks for the same games and settings. The figures above do not establish current street prices or a cross-vendor value ranking.
What the RTX 5070 Ti example does—and does not—tell you
The RTX 5070 Ti illustrates why a specification sheet is only one part of the decision. NVIDIA lists fourth-generation ray-tracing cores, DLSS 4 features including Ray Reconstruction and Multi Frame Generation, and 16 GB of GDDR7 for the card. Those specifications identify relevant capabilities; by themselves, they do not establish how it compares with other GPUs in every path-traced game or whether it meets your personal frame-rate target. NVIDIA’s product specifications provide the reference configuration, while individual board-partner models may vary.
Use your own target games and settings to decide whether those capabilities are useful. Then confirm the exact card’s fit and compare independent, feature-labeled benchmarks before making a price/performance judgment.
