A foldable phone is worth considering when its shape solves a problem you encounter often: a flip model folds smaller, while a book-style model opens into a larger screen for reading, multitasking, and media. The trade-off is a higher purchase cost and a flexible screen and hinge that need model-specific care. Before buying, compare how you will use the phone with its handling, battery, cameras, support, and total ownership cost.
Is a foldable phone worth it?
Start with how often you would use the feature that makes the phone fold. If you want a handset that takes up less space when closed, a flip may fit. If you regularly want a larger workspace for two apps, reading, or video, a book-style foldable may be more useful. Compare each candidate with a conventional phone at a similar price. Consider the unfolded screen size, but also the device’s folded width, thickness, and weight; whether you like using its outer screen; and what you give up in areas such as cameras or battery life. The fold matters most when it changes tasks you do repeatedly—not simply because the screen is unusual.
Choose the shape that fits your day
Flip-style: a smaller folded footprint
A flip folds a conventional-sized phone in half, making the closed device more compact. Depending on the model, its cover screen may handle quick interactions, and the hinged design can provide hands-free camera angles. Check whether the cover screen can do the tasks you actually need, or whether you would still have to open the phone for most of them.

Book-style: a larger screen when open
A book-style foldable opens to a larger display that can make reading, media, and seeing two apps at once more comfortable. The larger inner screen does not guarantee that every app will use the space well: check app scaling and multitasking behavior on the exact model. Also try the outer screen and the folded device in your hand; screen diagonal alone does not tell you how it handles.
Compare the phone, not just the hinge
Use the same checks for every model on your shortlist. Specifications and support terms are model- and market-specific, so verify them with the manufacturer for the exact device you plan to buy.

- Handling: Compare folded width, thickness, weight, opening feel, and how comfortable the outer screen is for routine tasks.
- Inner display: Look at screen size and aspect ratio, crease visibility, reflections, and how your most-used apps scale. If possible, try a display model in person.
- Battery and charging: Battery capacity is not the same as real-world endurance. Look for independent tests with a method comparable to your use, and compare charging results separately.
- Cameras: Check the actual lens selection and zoom range rather than relying on megapixel counts. Decide whether the folding design’s camera flexibility offsets any missing lens.
- Software and support: Confirm multitasking features, cover-screen behavior, app compatibility, update commitment, warranty terms, and authorized repair options in your country.
- Total price: Compare the current price and storage tier with a conventional flagship. Include any case or protection plan you expect to buy, and read the plan’s local terms and exclusions.
Use model-specific evidence for battery, price, and specifications
Figures for one phone are not averages for foldables. For example, Samsung Canada’s guide lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 with a 7.6-inch display and a weight of 201 g; those are manufacturer specifications for that model, not category-wide benchmarks: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 buying guide.

In that review, Tom’s Guide measured 12 hours 19 minutes in its 5G web-surfing battery test and reported a 70% charge after 30 minutes in its test setup. The battery result lagged some competing phones in its comparison. Treat those as results for that review’s test conditions, not a promise about your own use or a prediction for other foldables.
The same review describes the Fold8’s crease as much less visible than before but still perceptible by touch, notes that the reviewed configuration has no telephoto lens, and identifies its IP48 rating as offering limited dust resistance. These are observations about that handset, not every foldable.

Understand screen care, water resistance, and repairs
Flexible displays and hinges call for care, but the exact instructions depend on the manufacturer and model. For Galaxy foldables, Samsung advises against pressing the inner screen with sharp objects such as a pen or fingernail, applying excessive pressure, or folding the phone with a card, coin, or key trapped between the screens. Samsung also says to leave the factory inner-screen film in place and not install unapproved films or stickers, which can damage the device or affect sensors: Samsung’s Galaxy foldable care guidance. Follow the equivalent instructions for another brand rather than assuming they are identical.
Check the precise ingress rating on the model you are considering. Samsung says IP48 Galaxy models have limited dust protection, not complete dust-proofing. Its guidance also says water resistance reflects laboratory conditions and can diminish over time; it does not recommend beach or pool use. A rating should not be generalized across a manufacturer’s lineup or generations.

Choose accessories for the exact model
A case made for the specific foldable is worth considering because the device has a distinct two-part construction. Samsung says foldable cases are available and commonly use two parts: Samsung’s foldable case guidance. Check the listing against the exact model name; do not assume a case for another handset will fit. A case is not a guarantee against hinge, screen, or impact damage.
