Zcash does not make every ZEC transaction private automatically. Its network supports both transparent and shielded transfers, and what the public can see depends on the transaction type and the wallet’s behavior. Before investing, understand what shielding conceals, what it leaves exposed, and why privacy features do not remove technical or market-access risks.
Are Zcash transactions private?
Some can be. Zcash has transparent addresses (t-addresses) and shielded addresses. A transparent-to-transparent transfer publishes the sender, recipient, and amount on the public blockchain. A fully shielded transfer encrypts the sender and recipient addresses and the amount, while zero-knowledge proofs let network nodes verify the transaction.
The ledger itself is not hidden: transactions are recorded on the public blockchain, and transaction fees remain visible whether or not a transfer uses shielded addresses. Transfers involving both transparent and shielded activity disclose a different mix of information from a fully shielded transfer.
| Transfer type | What is visible on the public blockchain | What shielding changes |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent to transparent | Sender, recipient, and amount | Nothing is shielded in the transfer. |
| Fully shielded | The transaction’s occurrence and fee | Sender and recipient addresses and the amount are encrypted; the network can still verify the transaction. |
| Transfer involving one transparent and one shielded party | Some transaction information is public, while shielded-side details are protected | It does not provide the same public concealment as a fully shielded transfer. |
These distinctions describe protocol behavior, not a guarantee that a person cannot be identified. Public blockchain details, wallet behavior, and information outside the chain can all affect privacy.

Why does the wallet matter?
Zcash’s wallet guide describes wallets that shield by default, wallets that let users choose, and wallets that support only transparent transfers. So owning or sending ZEC is not, by itself, evidence that a transfer was shielded. Check the wallet’s current support and settings before relying on its privacy behavior.
| Wallet behavior | What it means for a user | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Shielded by default | The wallet’s default transaction behavior is intended to use shielded transfers where supported. | Which address types and transaction paths it supports, and whether the intended transfer remains shielded. |
| User chooses | The user selects whether to use a transparent or shielded path. | Which setting or address the wallet will use for each send or receive. |
| Transparent only | The wallet does not offer shielded transfers. | Whether its limitations meet the user’s needs before funds are deposited. |
The guide recommends a wallet or exchange that is “shielded by default” for people seeking a confidential financial history. That is a recommendation about wallet behavior, not a claim that every transaction or related record will be private.
What can still reveal or connect activity?
Shielding reduces the transaction details exposed on the public blockchain; it does not hide every signal about network participation or erase records kept elsewhere. Zcash’s privacy guidance warns that a unique IP address can let network observers correlate Zcash transactions with one another and with other internet traffic. It also identifies transaction IDs, amounts, counterparty details, fees, and interactions between transparent and shielded activity as potential sources of linkability.
External records can matter too. Exchange records, payment documentation, communications, or a person’s own disclosures may connect an address or transfer to an identity. A shielded transfer is therefore not a promise of universal anonymity, and a public transaction’s details can sometimes be connected to other information.

Moving funds into a shielded pool does not erase their origin
ZIP 315, an official wallet best-practice proposal, recommends holding long-term funds shielded. It also explains that a shielding transaction is linked to the transparent addresses it spends from and can reveal links to recipients or to holders of viewing keys. Treat shielding as a way to limit what is disclosed about a transfer, not as a way to delete or retroactively conceal its transparent history.
Can you prove a Zcash payment to an accountant?
A viewing key can allow someone to read shielded transaction details without giving that person authority to spend the funds. This can support selective disclosure for accounting, audit, or compliance. A viewing key is read access, not spending control.

Support depends on the wallet and address type. Zcash’s address documentation describes limitations in the implementations it covers: Sapling viewing-key support is not available there, and Sprout support is partial. Confirm that the particular wallet and address you use support the viewing-key function you need before relying on it to produce records.
How much Zcash activity has been shielded?
In its 2026 Form 10-K for the year ended 2025, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reported that, from network inception through December 31, 2025, approximately 45% of Zcash transactions had been unshielded, 45% involved one shielded party, and 10% involved two shielded parties. This is a historical split by transaction count. It is not the share of ZEC supply held shielded, a measure of anonymity strength, or a description of usage after that cutoff date.

What privacy-related risks should investors consider?
Privacy is one technical feature of Zcash, not an investment outcome. It does not establish that ZEC will rise in value, that a particular wallet offers the desired privacy, or that exchanges and other services will continue to support every transaction type.
SEC-filed materials describe risks rather than predict that they will occur. The 2025 annual report says shielded transactions use zk-SNARKs to protect amounts, senders, and recipients, while noting that key-generation mechanisms may be susceptible to quantum attacks. It also describes a distinct quantum-risk profile for shielded pools: they do not expose a user’s public key in the same way as the unshielded pool. That distinction does not make Zcash categorically quantum-safe.
A separate SEC-filed registration statement identifies possible consequences of privacy-related concerns for businesses facilitating ZEC, including litigation, loss of banking or other services, platform removal, or additional scrutiny that could affect ZEC’s price. It also describes cryptographic failure and other network risks. These are disclosed scenarios, not forecasts or individualized investment advice.
Quick Recap
Checklist: what to verify before using a ZEC wallet
- Shielded support: Confirm that the wallet supports shielded transactions, not just ZEC custody or transparent transfers.
- Default behavior: Check whether shielding is automatic or an opt-in choice, and verify the address and path the wallet will use for the transfer you intend to make.
- Address and viewing-key support: If you need selective disclosure, confirm the relevant address type and viewing-key features work in that wallet.
- Custody and recovery: Understand who controls the spending keys and how recovery works. The cited Zcash guidance does not establish product-specific custody or recovery terms.
- Exchange and jurisdiction access: Check whether the relevant exchange supports the ZEC deposit or withdrawal path you plan to use and whether its rules apply where you live. Availability can vary; the cited guidance does not establish current product-by-product or jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction support.
- Hardware-device compatibility: Zcash’s guide lists hardware wallets as a wallet category, but that does not confirm that a particular device supports ZEC or shielded transactions. Verify both with the manufacturer and wallet documentation before transferring funds.
