Its purpose, as OpenELA describes it, is to provide a maintained, redistributable source foundation that developers can use to build compatible Enterprise Linux distributions.
What is OpenELA?
OpenELA describes itself as a trade association of open-source Enterprise Linux distribution developers. CIQ, Oracle, and SUSE created the collaboration and uphold it, according to OpenELA’s About page. The association says its mission is to make secure, transparent, reliable Enterprise Linux source globally available as a buildable base.
OpenELA launched in August 2023, according to its October 2024 first-year retrospective. The organization framed the effort as a way to preserve broad access to Enterprise Linux source code.
What does OpenELA provide?
OpenELA’s FAQ describes its output as “Freely available, redistributable and maintained Enterprise Linux (EL) compatible source code.” It is intended as source that others can use to build distributions—not as a finished operating system image for end users.

For its own charter and project, OpenELA defines Enterprise Linux compatibility as 1:1 and bug-for-bug source-code compatibility aligned at present to RHEL and CentOS. That is OpenELA’s project framing, not a claim that OpenELA has tested or certified every Enterprise Linux distribution. See the OpenELA FAQ for its definition.
How does OpenELA relate to RHEL and CentOS?
OpenELA’s compatibility target is aligned to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and CentOS, as described in its FAQ. The relationship is best understood as a shared-source layer: OpenELA makes source available for developers and vendors working on compatible distributions, while downstream distributions remain the installable operating systems people choose and run.

How is OpenELA governed?
OpenELA’s January 24, 2026, Board retrospective on 2025 describes governance through a board, a Technical Steering Committee (TSC), and working groups, with open technical discussions and published decisions. The Board reports that the association delivered source updates and maintained governance through those bodies during 2025; that operational account comes from the organization itself.
The TSC says it governs technical aspects of the community. In a June 16, 2025, technical vision, it described work toward a common foundation and greater transparency. The Board’s January 2026 retrospective also identified broader adoption, additional distribution validation, more ISV participation, and evolving tools as future priorities. These are stated goals and an organizational account of activity through 2025, not evidence of developments after that report.

What OpenELA is—and is not
- It is: an association and source collaboration whose stated output is maintained, redistributable Enterprise Linux-compatible source.
- It is not: a Linux distribution users install instead of choosing an operating system.
- It does not establish by itself: that a downstream distribution has been tested, certified, or supported by OpenELA.
OpenELA Board Chair Arthur Tyde made the distinction explicit in the Board’s January 24, 2026, retrospective: “OpenELA is not a Linux distribution, nor is it a replacement for the innovation and differentiation that distributions provide.”
What to check when evaluating an OpenELA-related distribution
OpenELA provides a shared source foundation, but choosing an installable distribution requires product-specific answers. Check the distribution’s own documentation for:
