For example: “Hi, this is [Business]. Sorry we missed your call. Reply with how we can help, or tell us a good time to call you back. We’ll respond [accurate time or business-hours expectation].”
What should I say in a text when I miss a customer’s call?
Keep the first message brief and specific to the caller’s likely reason for contacting you. A useful pattern is:
- Identify the business: The caller may not recognize the number sending the text.
- Acknowledge the missed call: Be direct; do not suggest that someone answered.
- Offer one next step: Invite a short reply about how you can help, or ask for a convenient callback time.
- Set an honest expectation: Say when the team will respond or return to business hours only if that timing is reliable.
Tier 1 Telecom’s example is: “Hi, this is Tier 1 Telecom. Sorry we missed your call. Reply with how we can help, or tell us a good time to call back.” Tier 1 Telecom published this operational guidance on August 25, 2026.
Do not ask the caller to send account numbers, medical information, payment details, or a long explanation by SMS. If you already know why the person called, tailor the invitation to that inquiry rather than sending a generic menu of unrelated services.

How should the message change by situation?
During business hours
Route any reply to the team that can handle the inquiry, such as a monitored service or sales queue. Give a response target only if staff can meet it.
After hours
Tell the caller when the team will be back and when to expect a response. Include an emergency contact or route only if a real emergency service or contact is available.

Scheduling links
A booking link can be useful when it fits the likely reason for the call, works well on a phone, and leads to a trustworthy scheduling page. Otherwise, a simple callback-time question is clearer.

What should happen after the text is sent?
A text-back works only if incoming replies are monitored and someone owns the follow-up. Decide which person or queue receives replies, who covers it when that person is unavailable, and what happens if the team cannot respond within the stated window. Treat delivery as uncertain: some numbers cannot receive SMS, and filtering or number type may prevent delivery. If a text cannot be delivered, create a callback task or provide a voicemail route rather than assuming the caller saw it.

Do not treat a caller’s missed call or a service-related text-back as permission to add that number to a promotional text list. Keep the exchange tied to the inquiry unless you have the separate consent appropriate to the marketing program. Tier 1 Telecom offers this as practical vendor guidance, not as a universal legal rule.

For U.S. federal law, the FCC has treated SMS messages to wireless numbers as calls for TCPA purposes and discussed consent obligations, including written consent for covered telemarketing. That does not establish that every one-off reply to every missed call has the same consent outcome; purpose, technology, circumstances, and applicable law matter. See the FCC’s DA 15-997.
Under the reviewed text of 47 CFR § 64.1200, recipients may revoke covered consent by any reasonable method that clearly expresses a desire to stop further covered calls or texts. The rule lists “stop,” “quit,” “end,” “revoke,” “opt out,” “cancel,” and “unsubscribe” as reasonable methods per se. Covered revocation requests must be honored within a reasonable time, no longer than ten business days. A single confirmation text is allowed only under specified conditions: it must only confirm the revocation, contain no marketing or promotional material, and be the only additional message after the request. These provisions apply in their legal context; the rule also has conditions for particular exempt message categories, which should not be generalized to every missed-call text. The cited federal material is U.S.-oriented and is not a jurisdiction-specific legal review.
