If automatic updates have ended, the Chromebook may still work, but it no longer receives automatic software or security updates. Your practical choices are to check for eligible extended updates, keep using it with that limitation in mind, investigate ChromeOS Flex for compatible hardware, replace it, or erase and recycle it.
Check whether updates have actually ended
Update support is tied to the device model, not simply its purchase year. Google’s Chromebook policy lists support dates by model, and the on-device Update schedule is the quickest way to check yours. See Google’s instructions for checking Chromebook update support and its automatic update policy and model list.
If the Chromebook is managed by a school or workplace, the schedule may say updates are controlled by an administrator. Contact the organization’s administrator before treating the device as personally unsupported; the organization may manage its update policy.
Check for extended updates before choosing what to do
Some eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can opt in to a total of 10 years of updates from the platform’s release. Google marks models that require opting in with an asterisk in its policy list. Eligibility depends on the exact model, so check Google’s extended updates information rather than assuming an older Chromebook qualifies.

Opting in is irreversible. It removes Android apps and the Google Play Store, and erases local data associated with Android apps. If you rely on those apps or their locally stored data, weigh that loss before accepting the extended updates.
Choose the option that fits your security needs and uses

Can you keep using it after updates stop?
Yes. Google says a Chromebook that is working well can still be used after updates end, while cautioning that it will not get more software updates. That does not restore official support: a device past its update date no longer receives automatic software and security updates. Decide whether that is acceptable for the accounts, personal information, and tasks you use on it. For sensitive or important work, prefer a device that still receives official updates.

Is ChromeOS Flex a good option?
Do not assume ChromeOS Flex is a guaranteed way to turn any Chromebook into a supported, updated device. Google designs Flex for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers, and officially supports it only on certified models. On non-certified hardware, Google does not guarantee performance, functionality, or stability. Check the certified models list for the exact model and its certification status; Google says that list was last updated September 2, 2026.
Flex also is not identical to Chromebook ChromeOS. It lacks integrations with Google-designed security chips and verified boot or firmware, and it does not support managed Google Play apps. If those features matter to you, Flex may not be an appropriate substitute.

Requirements for making a Flex installer
For a supported installation, Google’s prerequisites include an Intel or AMD x86-64 processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, at least 16 GB of internal storage, USB boot capability, and full administrator access to the BIOS. Review Google’s ChromeOS Flex installation requirements and the certified-model list before proceeding.
- Confirm that your exact computer model is certified and check its certification status.
- Confirm that it meets the hardware, USB-boot, and BIOS-access requirements.
- Use a USB drive of at least 8 GB to create the installer. Creating it erases all contents on that USB drive, so back up anything stored on it first.
When should you replace it?
Consider replacement if you need ongoing official security updates, or if the Chromebook no longer handles the apps and tasks you rely on. Before choosing a replacement, check that exact candidate model’s update end date in Google’s policy list and confirm that it supports the apps you need. A newer purchase date alone does not establish how long a model will receive updates.

How to prepare an old Chromebook for recycling
Before handing the Chromebook over, remove your personal data with a factory reset. Google recommends resetting the device and clearing data before recycling. Its Chromebook recycling guidance lists laptops, including Chromebooks, as accepted devices through its recycling program and describes mail-back and local drop-off options. Availability and accepted items vary by location and can change, so check the current terms for your area.
If the Chromebook belongs to a school or workplace, check with the administrator before resetting or recycling it; it may be managed or contain organization data.
