Use the cleanup tools built into Windows or macOS, and buy storage only after you know whether you need more local capacity or simply somewhere to archive large files. A nearly full drive is a storage problem; by itself, it does not show that the SSD is failing.
Check what is using your SSD space
Start with the operating system’s storage view. It helps distinguish large personal files and apps from temporary data, and gives you a chance to review items before deleting them.
Windows
Open Settings > System > Storage. Review the categories and large files before removing anything. Windows’ drive-space guidance also covers built-in cleanup options.
Mac
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open System Settings > General > Storage. The categories may update as you manage files. Apple’s “System Data” category includes Apple and third-party files that do not fit another category; its presence is not a reason to delete system files. See Apple’s Mac storage guidance.

Clear files you can safely replace
Work through low-risk cleanup before removing anything whose purpose you do not recognize. Common candidates include:
- Files in Downloads that you no longer need.
- Temporary files and other items surfaced by the operating system’s cleanup tools.
- Old phone or device backups, after checking that you no longer need them.
- Unused applications and games.
- Media you can stream or download again.
On Windows, go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations and review each category before removing items. Storage Sense can remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin; Disk Cleanup is another built-in option. Empty the Recycle Bin when you want to reclaim its contents. If you remove a previous Windows installation, you lose the ability to return to the previous Windows version.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
On a Mac, empty the Trash to reclaim space. Avoid deleting files from system folders or removing unfamiliar items just because they appear in a storage category. Apple also suggests moving large media libraries, including Photos and iMovie libraries, to another storage device when appropriate.
Move files you want to keep
If large videos, photo archives, or project files are taking up room but you still need them, move them instead of deleting them. A compatible external drive can keep those files available without using internal SSD capacity. For a portable drive, check that its connection works with your computer and that the filesystem suits the devices you plan to use.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Cloud storage is another option for files you do not need to keep downloaded locally. With OneDrive Files On-Demand, for example, a smaller local placeholder can stand in for a file stored in OneDrive until you need it. Cloud accounts have storage limits, and a file that is not downloaded may not be available offline. Keep a separate backup of irreplaceable files; a move or sync is not a substitute for a backup.
Keep enough room for the task or update you need
There is no single free-space percentage that fits every SSD and every use. If you are trying to install a Windows update, follow the space requirement or prompt shown for your device and update rather than relying on a blanket target. Microsoft’s current support guidance, accessed in 2026, gives typical requirements of 6 GB–11 GB or more for feature updates and 2 GB–3 GB or more for quality updates. Actual needs vary with the update path, optional features, installed languages, and other update content.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Windows may offer the option to use external storage when an update needs more room. Follow that supported prompt and back up important files first. Microsoft’s guidance on freeing space for Windows updates explains this route. Once you have reclaimed or moved files, retry the task and read any new space message carefully.

The right next step depends on what you need to store and how you use it. An internal SSD upgrade is possible only on computers designed to support one; check your exact model’s specifications before buying parts.

| Option | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Delete replaceable files or unused apps | Recovering space from downloads, backups, temporary data, and content you can get again | Confirm the item is no longer needed before deleting; empty Trash or Recycle Bin to reclaim its space. |
| Move files to external storage or cloud storage | Keeping archives and large files without occupying internal SSD capacity | Check port and filesystem compatibility, offline access needs, account limits, and backup arrangements. |
| Upgrade or replace the internal SSD | Adding always-available local capacity, if the computer supports an upgrade | Verify compatibility for the specific computer. Device upgradeability and current prices are not established here. |
What rising SSD prices mean for your decision
Rising prices are market context, not a reason to buy a particular drive immediately. In a March 2026 executive summary, Omdia estimated that SSDs would be almost 13 times the price of HDDs per gigabyte through 2026, more than double the ratio in 2023. The estimate appears in a report hosted by Hammerspace and compares storage types at an industry level; it is not a current retail quote for a consumer SSD in a particular country. Read the Omdia executive summary.
If the space shortage is mostly old media or projects you rarely open, external storage may be less disruptive than replacing an internal drive. If you need all files available offline and your computer supports an internal upgrade, compare compatible options against that need and your budget. In either case, identify the actual files and capacity problem before spending.
Windows version note
Microsoft’s cited storage guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 support content. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; menus and available support can vary by version. Apple’s menu path above is specifically for macOS Ventura 13 or later.
