If your portfolio falls when the Nasdaq falls, first find out what you actually own and whether your investment plan still fits. An index decline alone is not a reason to sell: your holdings, time horizon, cash needs, and target allocation determine what action—if any—makes sense.
Start by checking what fell in your portfolio
The Nasdaq is an index, not a complete description of your investments. A portfolio can include Nasdaq-listed companies, a concentrated technology fund, a broad-market fund, bonds, or a mix of assets. The index’s movement does not tell you which of those drove your own result.
Review your account’s performance and holdings rather than assuming that an investment is exposed to the Nasdaq because of its name or recent movement. Look at asset categories, sectors, individual positions, and the underlying holdings of each fund. Several funds can own many of the same companies, so the number of funds you hold does not by itself establish diversification. Investor.gov explains that diversification should be considered across and within asset categories, and that focused funds may not provide broad diversification: Investor.gov’s guide to asset allocation and diversification.
Decide whether your investment plan still fits
Before changing investments, check whether your goals, time horizon, financial circumstances, or ability to tolerate risk have changed. Those factors help determine an appropriate allocation between asset categories and within them. If your circumstances have changed, reassess the target allocation itself instead of automatically restoring an old target. Also consider whether you need to withdraw money soon. A long-term plan and a near-term cash need are different situations; the index decline alone cannot resolve that difference. If you are unsure how a possible change affects your goals or tax situation, consider seeking individualized help from a qualified financial or tax professional.
Check concentration and overlap
Look beyond the number of holdings. A portfolio can contain several funds and still depend heavily on the same companies, sector, or market segment. Review fund fact sheets or holdings pages for the largest positions, then check whether those names recur across funds. Consider the overall balance of stocks, bonds, and other categories as well as concentration within each category.

Diversification can reduce exposure to losses, but it cannot eliminate investment risk. The SEC’s Investor.gov states: “Diversification can’t guarantee that your investments won’t suffer if the market drops.” See its explanation of diversification.
If your target allocation still fits, consider rebalancing
Rebalancing means bringing your portfolio back toward a target allocation that remains suitable for your circumstances. A market move can leave the actual mix different from the intended one. Rebalancing is not a forecast that one asset will outperform; it is a way to manage the portfolio’s allocation against a plan.

You can use new contributions to add to underweighted categories, sell some overweight holdings, or combine the approaches. The SEC guide describes these methods and notes that rebalancing can be based on a schedule or on a pre-set allocation threshold. It generally works best when relatively infrequent. Choose a method in advance rather than making repeated changes in response to each market move.
Compare the trade-offs before placing trades
Before buying or selling, compare the proposed change with your goals and account circumstances. In particular, consider whether it changes your total stock and bond exposure, reduces or increases concentration, and addresses a lasting change in your situation or only a reaction to recent performance.

- Redirect contributions: New money can be directed toward underweighted categories without selling existing investments.
- Buy underweighted holdings: This can move the allocation toward its target, but may use cash you need for other purposes.
- Sell overweight holdings: This can reduce an overweight position, but a sale may have tax consequences or transaction costs.
- Combine methods: Using contributions and trades together may provide another way to approach the target; assess the costs and tax implications of any transactions.
The SEC and FINRA advise investors to consider whether a rebalancing method will trigger transaction fees or tax consequences. Their Investor Bulletin: Year-End Investment Considerations for Individual Investors also notes that a financial professional or tax adviser may help identify ways to minimize potential costs.

A fall in the Nasdaq does not establish when markets will recover or whether a particular investment will rebound. Vanguard has described a historical illustration in which moving a balanced portfolio of 60% stocks and 40% bonds into 100% cash for three months after a severe market event resulted in a 74% probability of underperforming the market, with average underperformance of 4.1%. Vanguard’s search result does not establish the study period or full methodology, so those figures are an illustration—not an independently verified forecast or a prediction for your portfolio. That example is not a reason to buy during every decline or to remain invested regardless of your needs. Use your own allocation, time horizon, liquidity needs, and costs to decide whether any adjustment is appropriate.
