Then check whether your wallet needs a device-specific card removal. A wallet hold or removal protects digital payments on the missing phone; it does not necessarily cancel the physical bank card. Contact the card issuer if the physical card is also missing, you cannot secure wallet access, or you notice suspicious transactions.
What to do first when your phone is missing
- Sign in from a trusted device. Open the official finding service for the phone and use the Apple, Google, or Samsung account associated with it.
- Lock the phone or enable its lost mode. This is the urgent, less destructive step. It can restrict access to wallet payments on the missing device.
- Check the wallet’s device-specific controls. If you need to remove a card from that phone, make sure you choose an action scoped to the device rather than removing a payment method from an entire account.
- Decide whether to erase the phone. Consider remote erasure if recovery seems unlikely or the risk is significant. Erasure wipes data, so do not confuse it with a reversible lock.
- Contact the issuer when needed. Call the bank or card issuer if the physical card is missing, wallet access could not be disabled, or you see suspicious activity. Follow its fraud guidance.
Remote actions depend on account access, device settings, and connectivity. Do not assume a command has completed if the service cannot reach the phone; check the device’s status in the official service when possible. Navigation labels and availability can vary by region, device, and account setup.
How to lock or remove Apple Pay cards from a lost iPhone
Use Lost Mode to put Apple Pay cards on hold
Use Find My on another Apple device, or the Apple Account device-management options, to mark the iPhone as lost. Apple says Lost Mode places the cards in Apple Pay on that device on hold. This protects the wallet on the phone, but it does not cancel the underlying physical cards: Apple says they remain active and usable as normal. Remove cards from the lost device if necessary
Apple describes ways to remove items from a lost device through Find My or Apple Account settings. Suspending or removing Apple Pay cards causes the ability to pay with them to be suspended or revoked by the card issuer or payment network, even if the device is offline. When it comes online, it attempts to erase the cards from the Secure Element; this does not mean that erasure happens instantly while the phone remains offline. How to lock or remove Google Wallet cards from a lost Android phone
Lock the Android device first
Use Google’s lost-device controls to find, lock, or erase the phone. Google says in-store purchases require a screen lock, so a locked device cannot be used to make store purchases. Locking is distinct from erasing: it restricts access without the wipe associated with erase. Follow Google Wallet’s guidance for keeping payment information safe.
Choose “Remove from device” for a particular phone
On the Google Wallet website, inspect the devices listed for the card and choose “Remove from device” if your aim is to stop tap-to-pay on the missing phone. Google says this device-specific action leaves the payment method available for online Google payments and services. Removing a payment method from the website at the account level is broader and may not remove the card from the Wallet app on a particular phone, so verify the device-specific status. Erase only when a full wipe is warranted
Google says erasing a lost Android device removes payment information, including credit and debit cards, from that device. It also wipes the phone’s data, making it more destructive than a lock or device-specific card removal. If you choose erase, weigh the loss of on-device data against the risk and your chances of recovery.
How to secure Samsung Wallet on a missing phone
Lock the phone through SmartThings Find
Sign in to SmartThings Find with the Samsung account associated with the phone, select the missing device, and choose Lock. Samsung US says locking the phone secures Samsung Wallet and requests suspension of transactions until identity is re-verified. This relies on the relevant Samsung account and finding capability being available; set up device-finding services before a loss where possible.

Use erase only if the risk justifies wiping the phone
Samsung also offers an erase-data option. A reset destroys data, so Samsung recommends backing up beforehand. Do not delay an urgent lock while deciding whether a full wipe is appropriate. If you cannot lock Samsung Wallet, Samsung advises contacting the card issuer using the number on the physical card. Its instructions are for Samsung US support; options can differ elsewhere. No. Locking a phone or placing its wallet card on hold is a device or digital-wallet security action, not necessarily cancellation of the physical card. Apple explicitly says physical cards remain active when Lost Mode puts Apple Pay cards on hold. If the physical card itself is missing, ask the issuer to block or replace it. Also contact the issuer if you cannot disable wallet use or find transactions you do not recognize; use the issuer’s official fraud process.

After securing wallet access
- Check the phone’s status in the finding service from a trusted device; do not assume a pending remote action has reached an offline handset.
- Review account access and recent transactions for unexpected activity.
- Keep the distinction clear when speaking with the issuer: report whether the phone, the physical card, or both are missing.
