If Xbox Cloud Gaming stops after you have been playing for a while, first check what happened just before it ended: the game may have been idle, closed or restarted, or the stream may have encountered a network problem. Microsoft documents idle detection and session endings when a game closes, but does not publish a universal maximum length for one active session. Use the clues below to narrow down the cause rather than assuming every disconnect is a timeout.
Start with what happened just before the session ended
Write down the approximate time into the session, the game, device, app or browser, and any exact message. Note whether you were actively playing, paused, or watching a cutscene; whether the game itself closed; and whether the stream froze or showed a network-quality warning. These contrasts help separate likely causes, but none alone proves why a particular session stopped.
- Idle or paused: The game had been inactive, perhaps during a long cutscene or pause.
- Game closed or restarted: You saw the game exit, crash, or request a restart.
- Stream degraded: The picture froze, became unresponsive, or showed a network warning before ending.
- Setup-specific: The issue happens on one game, device, or connection but not another supported setup.
If the game was idle, consider idle detection
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Streaming developer documentation says, “Xbox Game Streaming ends user sessions when it detects users being idle.” It specifically warns that long cutscenes can trigger idle handling and recommends that game developers use the XDisplayAcquireTimeoutDeferral API. This is documented platform behavior, not a published universal consumer-facing idle timer. The documentation does not give players a setting to disable idle handling; if a session ends during a cutscene, the game’s handling is relevant. Microsoft’s game-streaming best practices also describe retaining a session for 5–10 minutes after an unexpected disconnection. That developer-facing recovery window is not the maximum length of a connected play session.
If the game closed or restarted, relaunch it
Microsoft says streaming sessions end when the game closes, including when a game update requires a manual restart. A crash or unexpected closure is therefore a plausible explanation if the game itself disappeared, but the general documentation cannot diagnose a particular crash.

- Relaunch the game and note any error, update prompt, or crash behavior.
- If it happens repeatedly in one game but not others, record that contrast and report it to Xbox or the game’s support team. It points toward a game-specific issue worth investigating, but does not establish the exact cause.
If the stream froze or showed a warning, check the connection
Xbox says cloud-streaming performance can vary with internet connection, location, device, and other factors. Its Cloud Gaming FAQ gives performance guidance of 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs, and tablets, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. Xbox Wire’s February 2025 update recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable connection, with wired Ethernet where possible or 5 GHz Wi-Fi as an alternative. These are recommendations, not guarantees against a drop.
- Check the network-quality indicator during a session if it is available on your device, and note whether its warning appears before the disconnect. Xbox described the indicator in its February 2025 update as a way to diagnose connection problems during cloud gaming.
- If practical, compare a wired Ethernet connection with Wi-Fi. Otherwise, try a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi network and reduce competing network use while you play.
- Compare a speed test with Xbox’s guidance, but do not treat the result as a complete diagnosis: speed alone does not establish latency, packet loss, or uninterrupted service. A 2024 IFIP Networking study found that increased latency and packet loss affected Xbox Cloud Gaming sessions in its experiments; its controlled setup does not provide a universal home-network threshold. Read the study.
Compare a supported device or route
Check Xbox’s current device and browser compatibility information, and make sure your device and browser are updated. If convenient, try another supported device or connection. If the problem follows one setup, that contrast helps narrow the investigation; switching from an app to a browser is not a guaranteed fix. Xbox notes that game, feature, and plan availability can vary by time, region, plan, and platform.

Check plan and monthly hours against the date
On September 3, 2026, Xbox announced that, beginning in November 2026, monthly cloud gaming hours included with Game Pass would be 15 for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. At the time of that announcement, the change was prospective; it does not establish that a particular player’s earlier disconnect was caused by a per-session timer. Xbox said further details—including pricing, extra hours, eligible games, markets, and how to check remaining time—would be provided in November. For a session ending in or after November 2026, check the current Xbox announcement and account information for the policy and remaining-time details then in effect.

If the issue continues, report the game, device and platform, app or browser and version, approximate elapsed playtime, exact error, and time of each occurrence. Include whether you were actively playing or idle, whether the game closed, the network indicator’s state, and whether another supported device or connection behaved differently. Those details help support assess whether the pattern is associated with a game, setup, connection, or account.
