When the power goes out, use battery-powered lights, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut, and check whether anyone relies on powered medical equipment. Never use a generator, grill, or fuel-burning heater indoors or near openings: carbon monoxide can be deadly. What to do next depends on the weather, outage length, household needs, and local emergency instructions.

Before an outage: prepare the essentials

Keep lighting and communications ready

Store a flashlight, headlamp, or battery-powered lantern where you can find it in the dark, along with spare batteries. A battery-powered or hand-crank weather radio, charged power bank, charging leads, and working battery-backup smoke and carbon monoxide alarms can also help. CDC notes that Americans lose power for about four hours per year on average; that is a population average, not a prediction for your home. CDC preparedness guidance lists basic outage supplies.

For an emergency flashlight, choose a type you can operate easily, check its stated runtime and battery requirements, and keep compatible spare batteries on hand. A headlamp leaves both hands free; a handheld flashlight is easier to direct. Battery-powered lights are a safer default than candles because they avoid an open flame.

Make a plan for medical equipment and medicines

If anyone in your household depends on powered medical equipment, discuss an outage plan with their clinician before an emergency. Check the device instructions and ask its manufacturer or distributor which backup batteries or generators are compatible. Plan how to get help or relocate if backup power will not meet the person’s needs; if life-support needs cannot be maintained during an outage, contact the care team or emergency services. FDA guidance on medical devices and disasters recommends planning for device-specific needs. Medicine storage requirements also vary, so follow the product instructions and ask a pharmacist or clinician what to do if temperature control is lost.

Large controls make tuning easier for families and seniors.
  • 3 Charging Modes: Solar, Hand Crank & USB-C Input – Stay powered with USB-C Input, built-in solar panel, or hand crank generator when electricity is unavailable. About 1 minute of steady hand cranking provides 15–20 minutes of radio listening; actual runtime varies by use and cranking speed. The radio can be used while charging via USB-C, but charging may take longer. This Solar Radio and Hand Crank Radio supports hurricane supplies, camping essentials, outdoor adventures, RV trips, survival kits, and 72-hour emergency preparedness. Multiple charging methods keep your emergency radio ready for blackouts, storms, remote travel, and off-grid situations.

Prepare for temperature and local conditions

Keep warm layers and blankets available for cold weather. Know where you could go for safe heating or cooling if your home becomes dangerously hot or cold. Identify how to check utility outage updates and official emergency alerts, and charge devices when severe weather is forecast. Local information matters: restoration estimates, shelters, water advisories, and other instructions depend on the affected area. Ready.gov’s planning guidance covers preparing for disasters.

Get ready to protect food

Keep an appliance thermometer in the refrigerator and freezer so you can assess temperatures rather than guess. CDC recommends keeping the refrigerator at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F or below; ice and coolers can help keep food cold if needed. See CDC guidance on keeping food safe after an emergency.

In the first minutes: protect people and preserve what you can

  1. Check for immediate danger. If there is smoke, fire, a gas smell, or another urgent hazard, leave and contact emergency services from a safe place. Do not investigate dangerous equipment or wiring in the dark.
  2. Address medical needs first. Activate the household backup plan for any powered medical device. Contact the care team or emergency services if needed support cannot be maintained.
  3. Use battery-powered lighting. Get a flashlight, headlamp, or lantern rather than relying on candles.
  4. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Opening them lets cold air escape and shortens the time food stays cold.
  5. Check local status and alerts. If safe, check whether the outage affects only your home or the wider area using your utility’s outage information and official alerts. Do not assume restoration timing or local conditions.
  6. Unplug sensitive electronics and appliances where practical. This can reduce the risk of damage from a power surge when electricity returns, as FEMA advises in its power outage safety information sheet.

While the power is out: avoid carbon monoxide and other hazards

Keep generators and fuel-burning devices outside

Never run a generator, grill, camp stove, or fuel-burning heater or cooker inside a home, basement, or garage. FEMA says generators and outdoor cooking equipment should be outside and at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents. Do not heat your home with a gas stove or oven. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, so you cannot rely on smell to detect it. Use working carbon monoxide alarms with battery backup. CDC reports that more than 500 Americans die from carbon monoxide poisoning annually; its cited page does not specify a year for that figure. CDC’s carbon monoxide guidance explains the risk; FEMA’s outage safety sheet gives generator placement guidance.

If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds or anyone has possible symptoms of exposure, get everyone outside into fresh air and call emergency services. Do not re-enter until authorities say it is safe.

Keep food cold and make discard decisions carefully

With refrigerator and freezer doors kept closed, CDC says an unopened refrigerator can keep food safe for up to 4 hours. A full freezer can keep food safe for up to 48 hours, or a half-full freezer for up to 24 hours. These are time limits for unopened appliances, not guarantees if food warms sooner; temperature and handling matter. Use appliance thermometers and follow current official food-safety guidance. Never taste food to decide whether it is safe, and do not rely on smell or appearance alone. When safety is uncertain, discard it. Check CDC’s food safety guidance for further instructions.

Manage indoor temperature and stay informed

Dress for the conditions and use blankets in cold weather. If the home becomes dangerously hot or cold, move to a safer location rather than trying to improvise unsafe heating or cooling. Conserve phone battery by limiting nonessential use and use a power bank or other safe alternate charging method if available. Continue to follow utility updates and official emergency alerts for local instructions. For broader outage precautions, see the CDC power outage safety guidance and Ready.gov disaster planning information.
