Check that your destination or location is covered, your phone supports the available network, roaming is enabled, and your line is eligible. Then try each available roaming partner manually and restart your phone. Domestic U.S. partner roaming and international roaming have different rules, and T-Mobile’s guidance cannot confirm whether a partner is available at your exact location.
Start with the symptom
Note what the phone can and cannot do: show a network, place calls, send texts, and use mobile data. Also check whether the problem happens only while roaming or also on T-Mobile’s own network. That distinction helps separate a network-registration problem from a data setting or allowance issue.
- No service or calls and texts fail: focus first on destination coverage, partner selection, device compatibility, and line restrictions.
- Calls and texts work, but data does not: check data roaming, any data limit, APN settings, and VPN use.
- Data works but is slow: check whether a high-speed international allowance has been used, and whether you are on a domestic partner with a limited allowance.
Try these general roaming checks
- Confirm the place and device are supported. International roaming depends on the destination, plan, and compatible handset. For domestic U.S. roaming, a partner must serve the location. T-Mobile’s domestic roaming guidance and international troubleshooting page explain the relevant limits.
- Turn Airplane mode off. If it is already off, toggle it on briefly and then off to prompt the phone to reconnect.
- Check roaming settings. Make sure data roaming is enabled if the problem is mobile data. International instructions may differ by destination; T-Mobile says dialing #RON# (#766#) may be needed to enable data roaming outside its listed 215+ Simple Global countries and destinations. This is not a general fix for failed registration or calls, and some destinations, including cruise ships, have different data-roaming rules.
- Manually try the available partner networks. Open the phone’s cellular or mobile network settings, switch off automatic network selection, and try each listed T-Mobile roaming partner in the country at least three times. T-Mobile recommends this step on its international service-issues page. Restore automatic selection afterward if needed.
- Restart the phone. Power it off, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Check for a roaming block or other line restriction. Account-specific restrictions and provisioning are not visible in the phone’s settings; contact T-Mobile if the checks above do not restore service.
If calls or messages are failing
Enter the number in the correct international format for the destination and the number you are calling. If only picture messages fail, first confirm mobile internet works, since picture messaging needs a data connection. If you are connected to Wi-Fi and using Wi-Fi Calling, follow T-Mobile’s separate Wi-Fi Calling troubleshooting rather than treating it as a roaming-network failure.
For unresolved international calls or messages, T-Mobile lists international roaming care at +1-505-998-3793. Contact details can change; check the current support instructions before calling.

If mobile data is unavailable or slow
Check the allowance and destination rules
International high-speed data is subject to destination and plan terms. T-Mobile states that after the applicable high-speed international data limit is reached, speeds are reduced to 256 kbps until the next bill cycle; this is a carrier-published service term, not a guarantee of a measured speed in every location. T-Mobile lists an International Pass as an option for adding high-speed international data, but it does not resolve a phone that cannot register on a network.
Domestic partner data has separate terms. T-Mobile says a phone may switch automatically to a partner outside its U.S. network areas when a partner is available and data roaming is enabled. Partners may be categorized as standard or preferred; some preferred partners may provide courtesy data beyond the plan’s included amount, but the amount varies and can change or be removed. Once the applicable domestic roaming data is used, data may not be available again until you return to T-Mobile coverage or the next bill cycle. Prepaid allowances vary by plan, so check your account rather than assuming a universal amount. See T-Mobile’s domestic roaming data terms.

Check APN settings and VPN use
If the phone connects to a network but data still fails, verify its access point name (APN) settings against T-Mobile’s device-specific instructions. T-Mobile lists fast.t-mobile.com for LTE devices and epc.tmobile.com for non-LTE devices, with IPv4/IPv6 settings described on its BYOD data and APN page. The same page specifies IPv4/IPv6 Auto or IPv4 Only in relevant troubleshooting guidance and lists IPv4/IPv6 or IPv4 only for international roaming protocol. Follow the instructions for your device rather than changing unfamiliar fields.
Temporarily turn off any VPN setting or app and test data again. If the connection works without the VPN, the VPN may be interfering; consult its provider before changing other network settings.
