If satellite messaging won’t connect, first confirm your phone and service support the feature, then move outdoors with a clear view of the sky and horizon and follow the phone’s positioning prompts. On iPhone, Messages via satellite is for supported devices outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage; it is not an emergency service. If you need emergency help, use the phone’s dedicated satellite emergency feature instead.
Start with the checks that apply to any satellite connection
- Check eligibility and local availability. Satellite features depend on your device, software, location, and service provider. Availability can also differ between ordinary messages and emergency assistance.
- Get a clear view of the sky and horizon. Go outside and move away from trees, buildings, terrain, or other obstructions. Heavy foliage can prevent a connection or slow it down. Follow the on-screen prompts to position or move the phone.
- Allow time, but do not rely on a fixed deadline. Apple estimates that a message may take about 30 seconds in ideal conditions with a direct view of the sky and horizon. That is an estimate, not a guarantee: surroundings, message length, and satellite-network status and availability affect connection time. Apple’s connection guidance explains these factors.
Troubleshoot Messages via satellite on iPhone
1. Confirm that the feature is supported
Apple lists iPhone 14 or later and availability in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Japan for Messages via satellite. Check Apple’s current availability information for your location and confirm carrier support where required; SMS via satellite specifically depends on carrier support. 2. Check iMessage and your SIM
Before you lose cellular coverage, turn on iMessage and make sure your SIM is active. These are setup checks in Apple’s iPhone guide to satellite features. If iMessage works but SMS does not, verify that your carrier supports SMS via satellite rather than assuming the satellite link itself is broken.
3. Improve the connection conditions
Move into an open area with an unobstructed view of both sky and horizon. Then follow the iPhone’s on-screen directions to establish or maintain the satellite connection. If the phone indicates that positioning needs adjustment, follow that prompt rather than repeatedly retrying from the same obstructed spot.

4. Check which message path you are using
Messages via satellite can use iMessage when available, while SMS has additional carrier and conversation conditions. Apple also describes restrictions on who can initiate SMS conversations and receive replies. Consult the iPhone guide if only SMS is failing; the exact behavior depends on the contact, software, SIM, and carrier setup.
5. Treat the wait time as variable
A connection can take longer than the ideal-condition estimate. Wait for the send process to complete while keeping the phone positioned as instructed; a longer wait by itself does not prove that the feature is unavailable.

If you have a Pixel, distinguish Satellite SOS from ordinary texting
Google’s cited Pixel instructions cover Satellite SOS, an emergency-assistance feature, not general person-to-person satellite messaging. For Satellite SOS, follow the on-screen positioning prompts, move to a place with a clear sky view if needed, check satellite availability in Settings, and keep Google Messages as the default messaging app. Connection and response times vary with location and conditions. See Google Pixel Help for the instructions. These steps should not be treated as evidence that Pixel supports ordinary satellite texting.
Use the emergency satellite feature when you need emergency help
Apple says, “Messages via satellite shouldn’t be used in emergencies.” If you need emergency help and cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable, use Emergency SOS via satellite instead. Google’s Satellite SOS guidance likewise concerns emergency assistance. Do not rely on ordinary messaging as a way to contact emergency services.

When recurring off-grid messaging is the real need
A dedicated satellite communicator may be a better fit if you regularly need two-way messages beyond cellular coverage. Garmin says compatible inReach devices paired with the Garmin Messenger app can exchange messages outside cellular coverage, and satellite features require an active subscription. Before choosing a communicator, check:
- Whether you need emergency-only assistance or routine two-way messages with friends and family.
- Coverage and local availability for the places where you intend to use it.
- Subscription activation and recurring requirements.
- Compatibility between the exact device, your phone, and the current app.
- Which message types are supported, since custom texts, check-ins, and other features can vary by device.
