The steps below help distinguish them without assuming every failed extraction has the same cause.
Check the gauges on a normal extraction attempt
NC’s official Korean guide says Essence Extraction is available from character level 45. At a gathering node, the attempt succeeds when the success gauge reaches 100% first; it fails if the failure gauge reaches 100% first. That gauge result is part of the mechanic, not by itself evidence of a bug. NC’s Korean Essence Extraction guide was updated January 28, 2026.
Each attempt reduces the node’s durability, whether it succeeds or fails. Once durability is depleted, the node disappears, so repeated attempts can use up a node even when the result is unsuccessful.
Improve extraction progression
The extraction skill increases gathering speed and success rate. NC’s guide says repeated extraction raises extraction level and awards dedicated skill points, which can be used to increase the skill. If attempts are repeatedly failing, check your extraction skill and available skill points rather than treating a normal gauge loss as a restriction.

If the Specialty Upgrade quest will not advance
A quest that does not complete is different from a gathering attempt that loses its gauge contest. The current third-party quest guide identifies Essence Extraction Novice 50 as the rank gate for the Novice-to-Professional upgrade. The objective calls for a Splendent Ruby gathered from Ruby nodes, followed by a return to the Artisan Essence Extractor for your faction. These are third-party quest details; verify the current journal and map in-game because quest information can change. Quest guide and faction routes.

Elyos route
The guide lists Ruby nodes in Ellun River Midstream, Verteron Fortress Ruins, Destroyed Abyss Gate, and Kraka Footpath. It identifies Korius in Verteron as the Artisan Essence Extractor.
Asmodian route
The game database lists Ruby areas as Dredgion Crash Site, Calderon Canyon, Tranein Highland, Silent Hill, and Nameless Cemetery, and names Alzirr as the Asmodian quest NPC. Asmodian quest database entry.

Confirm the item name
The requested quest item is Splendent Ruby. Radiant Ruby Gemstone is a separate crafting material and is not interchangeable merely because both names contain “Ruby.” Check the precise item and objective shown in the journal before continuing to gather.

The available official extraction guide explains ordinary gauges and skill progression, but does not establish a trigger, duration, or remedy for this restriction. Stop repeating the same action and consult official game support or current official notices. No verified source establishes that waiting a set time, switching characters, or using another workaround clears it.
