Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Classic Outlook freezes, crashes, will not start, or stops sending and receiving, first identify the symptom and check for a matching issue in your installed version. Then work from low-risk checks toward Safe Mode, profile and data-file diagnostics, and Office repair. These steps are for Classic Outlook for Windows, not the new Outlook app.
First, confirm which Outlook you are using
This guide applies to Classic Outlook for Windows. Microsoft’s Classic-specific procedures and Get Help troubleshooters do not apply to new Outlook for Windows. If you are unsure, check the app you opened before following steps that use outlook.exe or Outlook’s classic ribbon.
Before changing settings, note the exact symptom and any error message. Common reports include “Outlook not responding,” a window stuck at “Processing,” “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook,” messages stuck in the Outbox, or a status of “Disconnected,” “Working Offline,” or “Trying to connect…”.
Also check Microsoft’s current known issues for Outlook. Match the issue to your installed version, build, and date; a workaround for an older build may not apply to a current installation.

If Outlook is slow, frozen, or stuck at “Processing”
Check for a dialog or background task
- Press Alt+Tab to look for a confirmation dialog hidden behind the Outlook window. If one is waiting for an answer, Outlook may appear unresponsive until you respond.
- Check the status bar. AutoArchive or processing a large attachment can take time. If it indicates work in progress, wait briefly before closing Outlook.
Restart Outlook from Safe Mode
For a window stuck at “Processing,” Microsoft documents a simple Safe Mode restart:
- Close Outlook. If it will not close normally, use Task Manager to end the Outlook task.
- Open the Windows Run dialog with Windows+R, enter
outlook.exe /safe, and press Enter. - Close Outlook after it opens, then launch it normally.
If the hang continues, use Safe Mode to test whether an add-in is involved, as described below. Microsoft’s Classic Outlook guidance for freezes and hangs covers these checks.

If Outlook crashes or will not start
Test Safe Mode and isolate add-ins
Safe Mode starts Classic Outlook without add-ins. Open Run with Windows+R, enter outlook.exe /safe, and press Enter. If Outlook works in Safe Mode but fails during a normal start, an add-in is a useful suspect; this result is a clue, not proof that a particular add-in is responsible.
- In Outlook, open File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Clear the check box for an add-in to disable it. Do not remove it while diagnosing.
- Restart Outlook normally. If the issue is gone, return to the same list, enable one add-in, and restart again.
- Repeat until the problem returns. The last add-in enabled is the likely conflict; leave it disabled or check with its vendor for an update.
If Outlook still fails in Safe Mode, add-ins are less likely to explain the problem. Continue with the profile and repair checks below.

Try a new Outlook profile
A profile stores account settings and other Outlook configuration. Testing with a new one helps distinguish a profile problem from a broader Outlook or Office problem. Follow Microsoft’s instructions to create an Outlook profile, then open Outlook using that profile. If Outlook works with the new profile, Microsoft’s diagnostic guidance identifies the old profile as corrupt and the source of the issue.
Repair a potentially damaged data file or Office installation
If Outlook’s data file may be damaged, use Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) instructions to scan and repair it. The tool is intended for Outlook data files; it is a different step from repairing Office program files.

If Outlook or Office files may be damaged, run an Office repair. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features in some Windows versions), find Microsoft 365 or Office, choose Modify, and select Quick Repair first. If the issue remains, run Online Repair. The labels and available options can vary by Office installation.
Use the startup troubleshooter when available
On Windows 10 or later, Microsoft’s Classic Outlook startup troubleshooter in Get Help is another diagnostic route. Run it on the affected PC and follow its prompts. Microsoft also provides Get Help troubleshooters for some Classic Outlook connectivity and authentication problems; use the one that matches your symptom. Availability can depend on the version of Windows and the issue.

If Outlook will not send or receive mail
Check connection and offline status
Look at Outlook’s status bar. If it says “Disconnected,” “Working Offline,” or “Trying to connect…”, test whether the PC can reach the internet. In Outlook, open the Send/Receive tab and select Work Offline to turn it off if offline mode is enabled. Microsoft’s Classic Outlook connection guidance provides further steps.
Inspect the Outbox, password, and mailbox storage
- Large or stuck message: Open the Outbox and look for a message with a large attachment. Provider attachment limits vary. Remove or reduce the attachment, or upload the file elsewhere and send a link instead.
- Changed password: If you changed the account password on your mail provider’s website, update the saved credentials Outlook uses for that account.
- Mailbox or cloud storage limit: Check whether the mailbox or associated cloud storage is full. A storage limit can prevent sending or receiving.
If these checks do not restore mail flow, test Safe Mode and a new profile, then consider data-file and Office repair. For intermittent connection or sign-in symptoms, run the matching Classic Outlook troubleshooter in Get Help.
How to interpret the results
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook works in Safe Mode but not normally | An add-in may be conflicting with Outlook. | Disable COM add-ins and re-enable them one at a time, restarting after each. |
| Outlook works with a new profile | Microsoft’s diagnostic guidance identifies the old profile as corrupt and the source of the problem. | Use the working profile and review Microsoft’s profile guidance before retiring the old one. |
| Outlook reports offline or disconnected | The PC’s connection or Outlook’s online state may be blocking mail flow. | Test internet access and turn off Work Offline if enabled. |
| The symptom matches a dated known issue and installed build | A version-specific Outlook or add-in issue may be involved. | Follow the current guidance for that issue and build rather than applying unrelated historical workarounds. |
Why a historical Teams add-in fix should not be applied broadly
Microsoft documented a specific incident beginning around March 12, 2026: some older Classic Outlook builds could crash and prompt for Safe Mode when paired with a newer Teams Meeting Add-in. Microsoft marked that issue fixed and advised updating Office; Online Repair or temporarily disabling that add-in were alternatives for the affected scenario. This was a conditional, dated issue—not evidence that the Teams add-in is a general cause of current Outlook crashes. Check the specific incident notice and the current known-issues page for applicability to your build.
