If it remains unresponsive, restart it; if it charges but drains quickly, check for ordinary battery drain before assuming the battery has failed. A cable, port, or other hardware fault can produce similar symptoms.
Identify your Kindle and its charging port
Before buying a cable or following model-specific charging advice, find the exact Kindle model. When the device responds, check Settings > Device Options > Device Info. If you cannot open Settings, use Amazon’s Kindle identification guide to compare its visible features and generations.
Kindles do not all use the same charging port. The identification guide distinguishes older models from newer ones, including models with USB-C. Match the cable to the port on your device rather than assuming that every old Kindle uses the same connector.
Check the cable, power source, and charging connection
- Try a compatible cable. Use a cable you know works and that fits your Kindle. Amazon recommends a compatible USB cable, preferably the one supplied with the device, in its battery guidance.
- Try another suitable power source. If possible, test a different USB power source or outlet. For some older Kindle-era USB ports, power from a keyboard or an older computer port may be too weak to replenish the battery, even if it slows further depletion; this is a model-era caveat, not a rule for every Kindle. See the older Kindle user guide.
- Check the charging instructions for your model. Charging arrangements vary by generation. For example, Amazon says the included cable for the cited 11th-generation Kindle can connect to a computer for charging, while wall charging requires a separately sold Amazon 5W charger. That instruction should not be generalized to older models; check the guidance for your specific Kindle in Amazon’s model information.
If the Kindle still shows no sign of charging after these checks, the issue could involve the cable, the charging port, or another hardware component—not necessarily the battery alone.

Restart a Kindle that appears frozen
A Kindle that looks stuck may be unresponsive rather than unable to charge. Amazon’s restart instructions say to hold the power button until a power dialog appears or the screen goes blank, then continue holding it for 40 seconds and release. The charge-indicator light should turn back on after a few seconds as the Kindle reboots.
Find common reasons a Kindle charges but drains quickly
Rapid drain does not automatically mean the battery is defective. Amazon notes that battery use can increase during initial downloads or software updates, while the Kindle indexes books, when its built-in light is brighter, or while its internet connection remains on. If the device otherwise works, consider these checks:

- Let initial downloads, updates, or book indexing finish; keep the Kindle connected to power during large downloads or indexing.
- Lower the built-in light if it is set brightly.
- Turn off the internet connection when you do not need it.
- Put the Kindle to sleep when you are not using it.
These steps follow Amazon’s battery-use and conservation guidance. If the Kindle continues to lose charge quickly after these causes have been addressed, battery wear is possible, but the symptoms alone do not establish that the battery is the faulty part.
Choose a safe next step if basic checks do not work
After trying a compatible cable and power source, restarting the Kindle, and accounting for ordinary drain, choose the next step based on the device’s condition and the availability of service for its exact model.

- Seek model-specific support or qualified service if charging still fails, the port appears damaged, or the Kindle has been dropped or otherwise damaged. A persistent fault can come from the battery, cable, port, or another component. Amazon’s Kindle (10th Generation) safety guidance says its lithium-ion polymer battery should be replaced only by an authorized service provider and warns against disassembly or accessing the battery. Instructions and service options can differ by model and region, so consult the safety guidance for your Kindle.
- Consider service or replacement if the device otherwise works but no longer holds a usable charge. Compare whether the cable and port have been ruled out, whether qualified service is available for the exact model, and the practical cost of service relative to replacement. There is no universal repair-versus-replace threshold that applies to every Kindle.
Do not open the Kindle or attempt a battery swap as a routine troubleshooting step. Amazon’s cited safety guidance is for the 10th-generation Kindle; check the instructions that apply to your own model before arranging repair.

A factory reset is not a first-line way to diagnose a charging problem. Amazon says resetting deregisters the Kindle and removes personal data, downloaded content, and content that has not synced. Try the reversible cable, power-source, restart, and battery-drain checks first. If you later decide a reset is appropriate, review Amazon’s factory-reset instructions and data warning before proceeding.
