If your new iPhone won’t transfer data, first check that the old iPhone is unlocked, connected to Wi-Fi, has Bluetooth on, and is close to the new phone. Keep both phones plugged in. If Quick Start still fails, use an iCloud or computer backup, or try a cable that supports both iPhone models. Before restoring a backup to a new iPhone that has already been set up, note that Apple’s restore process requires erasing the new phone and removes its current contents.
Check the basics before trying Quick Start again
Quick Start can use an iPhone or iPad running iOS 11 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 13 or later. On the old iPhone, connect to Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, unlock the phone, and go to the Home Screen. Place it near the new iPhone and follow the setup prompts. Keep both phones close together and connected to power while the transfer runs.
Apple does not give a fixed completion time: it says transfer times vary with network conditions and the amount of data being moved. Avoid interrupting the process just because it takes longer than expected.
Quick Start isn’t working or its prompt disappeared
If the setup prompt vanished
Restart both iPhones, then place them near each other and try Quick Start again. Apple specifically recommends restarting both devices when the prompt to set up the new device disappears. Apple also recommends updating devices to the latest iOS version.

If Quick Start is unavailable
A new iPhone enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business cannot use Quick Start to transfer from the current device. Use another supported transfer route or contact the organization’s administrator if the phone is managed.
If the transfer remains stuck
Check that both phones remain nearby and powered, and that the old phone is still unlocked with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. If it still will not complete, switch to an iCloud or computer backup, or consider wired migration if the two models support it. If an Apple-supported option also fails, note the exact on-screen message and contact Apple Support; there is no single documented fix for every stalled-transfer state.

Choose another way to move your data

Use iCloud when direct transfer fails
If the old iPhone is available, keep it nearby, connected to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and plugged in. At the data-transfer screen, choose “Download from iCloud” and follow the prompts. This is a way to avoid a direct phone-to-phone transfer while still using the old device during setup.
If the old iPhone is unavailable, you can restore an iCloud backup during setup instead. Check the backup’s date and size so you choose the intended copy. If the new iPhone has already been configured, Apple’s backup-restore flow requires erasing it first. Erasing removes the new phone’s current contents, so save anything on it that you want to keep before proceeding.

Restore from a computer backup
If you have a backup made with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, connect the new iPhone to the computer that contains it and follow Apple’s restore instructions. The new phone must be erased first if it has already been set up; make sure its current contents are backed up or otherwise saved before erasing.
Choose an encrypted computer backup if you need to carry over Health and Activity data from the iPhone or Apple Watch. An unencrypted backup does not transfer that data.

Check iPhone models before trying a wired transfer
Apple’s wired migration instructions specify accessories by the generations of both phones. Confirm the model of the old and new iPhone before using or buying a cable; a cable mismatch will not resolve account, software, or backup problems.

Follow the on-screen instructions and let migration finish on both phones. Wired migration still takes time; using a cable does not guarantee that a transfer will complete if the underlying issue is unrelated to the connection.

What to check before choosing a route
- Is the old iPhone available and working?
- Do you have a recent iCloud or computer backup, and can you sign in to the relevant Apple Account or access the computer?
- Can you connect to Wi-Fi, or do you have the correct cable and adapter for both phone models?
- Do you need Health and Activity data from the iPhone or Apple Watch? If restoring from a computer, use an encrypted backup.
- Has the new iPhone already been set up? Restoring an iCloud or computer backup through Apple’s cited restore flows requires erasing it first.
