Treat a chatbot’s medical answer as unverified, even if it sounds certain. Don’t use it to diagnose yourself or decide whether to start, stop, or change treatment. If symptoms are serious, sudden, or rapidly worsening, seek immediate medical care rather than asking the chatbot to judge how urgent they are. Otherwise, take the exact claim and your questions to a qualified health professional who can assess them in context.
Why a confident answer may still be wrong
Fluent wording and certainty are not evidence that a medical answer is accurate. The American Medical Association (AMA) warns that AI can sound confident even when it is wrong. The World Health Organization (WHO) likewise says large language model responses may sound plausible and authoritative while containing serious errors or being completely incorrect. Neither an alarming answer nor a reassuring one can establish what is happening to you.
A chatbot also may not know your full medical history or the details a clinician would consider. The AMA advises patients not to treat chatbot output as a substitute for a physician’s advice.
What to do next
- Stop using the answer as a decision. Don’t accept it as a diagnosis or use it alone to make treatment decisions. If you are considering changing care, contact a qualified health professional instead.
- Check whether you need immediate care. If symptoms are serious, sudden, or rapidly worsening, seek immediate medical help. In the United States, the AMA advises calling 911; elsewhere, use your local emergency number or service. Don’t ask a chatbot whether you can safely wait. A worrying response alone does not prove an emergency, and a reassuring response does not rule one out.
- Save the exact claim and your questions. Note what the chatbot said, what symptoms or context prompted the answer, and what you want clarified. Contact your doctor or another qualified health professional for an interpretation that takes your circumstances into account.
- Protect your privacy. Avoid entering identifying details or detailed health records unless you understand the chatbot service’s privacy terms. Privacy protections may differ from those at a doctor’s office; don’t assume the same confidentiality applies.
How a chatbot can help without becoming your doctor
Used cautiously, a chatbot can help explain unfamiliar medical terms, explore general possibilities, compare questions about treatment options, or prepare questions for a clinician. It can help you organize what you want to ask, but it cannot assess your complete medical history or replace professional judgment.

The AMA’s patient guidance on using AI chatbots frames AI as a complement to—not a replacement for—advice from a doctor. If you use a chatbot to learn, treat its output as a starting point to verify, not as a personal medical conclusion.
If you keep checking because you feel worried
Repeatedly asking chatbots or searching online for reassurance may make worry harder to manage. The UK’s NHS describes repeated reassurance seeking and obsessive checking of health information as possible features of health anxiety; it also notes that anxiety can cause physical symptoms. This does not mean that your symptoms are “just anxiety.” If health worries are taking over, contact your GP or another clinician for support rather than continuing a cycle of chatbot checks. See the NHS guidance on health anxiety.

Questions to use when you speak with a clinician
- “A chatbot told me [exact claim]. Does this fit my symptoms and medical history?”
- “What should I do next, and are there changes to my treatment I should avoid making on my own?”
- “What symptoms or changes should prompt me to seek urgent care?”
- “Are there reliable sources where I can learn more about this?”
These questions can help you bring the chatbot’s claim into a real clinical conversation without treating the chatbot as the authority.

The AMA’s patient-facing guidance, published May 21, 2026, advises against relying on chatbots for emergencies, diagnosis, or treatment decisions; it also discusses privacy and using AI to prepare for a clinician visit. Its emergency-number advice is US-specific. The WHO’s May 16, 2023 statement concerns safety risks from health-related large language models generally, not an assessment of any individual chatbot answer. The NHS page is UK guidance about health anxiety, not a diagnosis of the reader.
