If your iPhone’s 80% charge limit leaves you short on battery, raise the limit for the day. On iPhone 15 models and later, go to Settings > Battery > Charging and choose 90%, 95%, or 100%. You can lower it again when you expect to spend more time near a charger. If your iPhone is already set to 100% but pauses near 80%, check whether Optimized Battery Charging or temperature is causing the pause.
Raise the Charge Limit when you need more battery today
On iPhone 15 models and later, Apple lets you choose a Charge Limit from 80% to 100% in 5-point increments. To get more of the battery’s available charge for a long day, open Settings > Battery > Charging and select a higher limit. There is no universal best percentage: choose one that fits your expected use, then set it lower again when you expect to be near a charger.
A higher limit gives you more charge available for the day, but Apple presents lower limits and optimized charging as ways to reduce battery wear over time. Apple does not promise a particular battery lifespan or a set number of extra hours from changing the limit.
Check which charging feature is stopping the charge
Charge Limit on iPhone 15 and later
Charge Limit is a ceiling you select. The phone charges to within a few percentage points of that limit and stops. If it remains connected and the charge falls by more than 5 percentage points, it resumes charging toward the limit. Apple also says the phone may occasionally charge to 100% even with a lower limit to keep its charge estimate accurate. See Apple’s explanation of Charge Limit and Optimized Battery Charging.

Optimized Battery Charging
On iPhone 15 models and later, Optimized Battery Charging is available when the Charge Limit is set to 100%. In certain situations, it delays charging beyond 80% and aims to finish near the time it expects you to unplug the phone. If you need a full charge sooner, check the Lock Screen for the notification showing when charging is expected to finish. Touch and hold it, then tap Charge Now.
Apple says the feature needs at least 14 days to learn a routine and at least nine charges of five hours or more in one location before it engages. Those are Apple’s stated operating conditions, not a guarantee that every person will see the same charging schedule.

iPhone 14 models and earlier
Apple documents Optimized Battery Charging, rather than a manually selected Charge Limit, for iPhone 14 models and earlier. Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging for the Optimized Battery Charging setting. Apple warns that turning off charging optimizations can increase battery wear.
Rule out heat if charging pauses unexpectedly
An iPhone may pause charging above 80% if the phone becomes too warm. This is separate from the Charge Limit. Move the phone and charger to a cooler place and let the temperature fall. Apple’s iPhone charging troubleshooting guidance covers this pause as well as other charging problems.

If it still will not charge, check the power path
- Inspect the cable and adapter for damage. Do not use damaged accessories.
- Make sure the cable is firmly connected to the phone and power adapter. Try another outlet, or use a known-good power source.
- Check the charging port for debris and clear it carefully if needed.
- After checking the connections and port, leave the phone charging for 30 minutes.
- If it still will not charge as expected, contact Apple or an authorized service provider. The 80% limit by itself does not mean the battery needs replacement.
Make an 80% charge last longer
If you prefer to keep the limit at 80%, reduce power use during the day. Apple recommends using Low Power Mode, reducing screen brightness, using Wi-Fi instead of cellular data where practical, and checking Settings > Battery to see which apps are using the most power. How much these steps help depends on your apps, signal, screen use, and other activity.
If you will be away from an outlet for an extended period, a power bank is another option. Choose one that suits your phone and charging needs; no particular model or performance claim is established here.
