If wildfire smoke is affecting air quality near your home, check local alerts and the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, cut down outdoor exposure, and make one room as clean and cool as possible. Conditions can change during the day, so check again before outdoor plans. If the pollution is from something other than wildfire smoke, follow local alerts and advice specific to that pollutant; smoke guidance may not apply.
Check local air quality before making plans
Start with the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and your local air-quality agency’s alerts. The map can show particle-pollution readings, fire locations, smoke plumes, smoke outlooks where available, and recommended actions. Read the selected monitor’s type and timestamp: the map may include permanent monitors, temporary monitors, and sensors, and a reading’s context matters.
AirNow’s map guide groups AQI readings into these categories:
| AQI | Category |
|---|---|
| 0–50 | Good |
| 51–100 | Moderate |
| 101–150 | Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups |
| 151–200 | Unhealthy |
| 201–300 | Very Unhealthy |
| 301+ | Hazardous |
These are AQI category ranges, not a substitute for current local guidance or individual health advice. Look at the recommendations accompanying current readings, and whether conditions appear stable, improving, or worsening. AirNow notes that smoke levels can change substantially within a day, so recheck before exercise, outdoor work, or other time outside.

Reduce time and effort outdoors
When smoke is present, postpone outdoor exercise and strenuous chores if possible. Move necessary activities to a cleaner period only when the map and local advisories indicate conditions have improved. If you must go out, keep the time and exertion as low as practical.
For essential outdoor work, take breaks in cleaner indoor air and use a well-fitting N95 respirator. Cloth masks do not protect against wildfire smoke. EPA’s wildfire-smoke health guidance also recommends N95 respirators for smoke exposure.

- Stay informed – Get an indication of current indoor air quality from the color-coded LED, and detailed information and an easy-to-understand air quality score in the Alexa app.
- Real-time alerts - Get notifications on your phone or announcements on Echo devices when Alexa detects poor indoor air quality.
- Automate climate control - Enable Routines to turn on or off your compatible Alexa devices, such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans, when the indoor air quality sensors detect changes.
Set up a cleaner-air room
- Choose a room to spend time in. Close its windows and doors while smoke is outside. Keep the room closed as much as practical.
- Run a properly sized portable air cleaner continuously. AirNow explains that portable air cleaners are designed to filter a single room or area. A room-sized cleaner with HEPA filtration is a suitable option; check its room capacity and use a setting you can tolerate running continuously. Do not use an ozone-generating air cleaner.
- Adjust central HVAC if available. Set the system to recirculate and close the fresh-air intake. Use a MERV 13-or-higher filter only if the particular HVAC system can safely accommodate it; ask an HVAC professional if unsure. During heavy smoke, check the filter and replace it sooner if it becomes heavily soiled.
- Keep indoor air from getting hotter or more polluted. Keep the room cool and avoid activities that add particles, including frying or other smoky cooking, sweeping, vacuuming, smoking, candles, fireplaces, and gas- or wood-burning appliances.
If a portable cleaner is unavailable, a box fan with a filter may be a fallback. AirNow warns that older fans can pose electrical or fire hazards; use a newer fan, take particular care with older models, and follow the fan’s safety instructions.
Balance smoke protection with heat safety
Keeping windows closed can make an already hot home unsafe. Do not stay in a dangerously hot room just to limit smoke exposure. If you cannot keep the room cool, go to a clean-air shelter or another air-conditioned building with good filtration, or stay with friends or family. Follow official local news and emergency alerts for evacuation instructions.

Take extra care if someone at home is more vulnerable
Fine particles in smoke can irritate the eyes and respiratory system, cause illnesses such as bronchitis, and aggravate chronic heart and lung disease. AirNow identifies people with asthma or other lung disease, heart disease, children and teenagers, adults generally 65 and older, and people with greater smoke exposure as groups that may need extra protection. It also notes that pregnant women and people with limited access to protective measures may face greater risk.
People with asthma or another lung condition should follow their prescribed plan and contact their clinician if symptoms worsen. Household members with heart or lung disease should follow their clinician’s existing advice. Everyone should avoid breathing smoke where possible, including people not in a higher-risk group.
Choose equipment by fit, not by promises
Air cleaners and filters can reduce particles indoors, but no device guarantees a smoke-free or risk-free home. Use these criteria when choosing or adjusting equipment:
Quick Recap
- Portable cleaner: Match its stated room capacity to the room, check that it uses HEPA filtration, confirm it does not generate ozone, and consider whether it can run continuously at a tolerable setting.
- HVAC filter: Check the filter’s MERV rating against the system’s safe compatibility and follow its replacement needs. MERV 13 or higher is not suitable for every system.
- Optional PM2.5 sensor: Consider what pollutant it measures, where and how it should be used, and how its readings can guide an action. A consumer sensor is optional, not a replacement for official AQI information. EPA/AirNow’s August 2023 guide to air-quality sensors for smoke covers choosing a sensor and interpreting readings.
