First identify where the problem occurs: the game is missing from your Library, its download or installation fails, or it installs but will not launch. Check your purchase and account before changing files; then follow the steps for the specific failure and error message.
If the game is missing from your Library
Confirm that Steam completed the transaction before troubleshooting the installation. Check your receipt email and purchase history for the purchase status. A pending transaction may not grant access yet.

- Make sure you are signed in to the Steam account that made the purchase.
- Remove any Library filters that could hide the title.
- Choose View > Hidden Games and check whether the game is hidden.
- Sign out of the Steam client and sign back in after confirming the purchase completed.
If the Library says “Pre-Load Complete,” Steam says the files may be present even though the account does not own the game or has lost access through Family Sharing. Confirm account access before reinstalling or moving files.
If the game will not download or install
Try one change at a time and test the download again after each one. That makes it easier to identify whether the problem was the client, cache, library permissions, files, or download region.

- Restart Steam, then restart the computer.
- In the Steam client, open Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. Steam says clearing the cache can fix games that will not download or start: Steam Support: Clear download cache. Clearing it does not remove installed games, but you will need to sign in again. Client labels can vary by version.
- Open Settings > Storage and use the repair option for the library folder with the problem. This can help when Steam cannot write to the library.
- For a game that is already installed or partly installed, open its Steam properties and use the local-file verification option, if available, to check for damaged or missing files.
- Change the download region in Settings > Downloads. Steam notes that a regional content server may be slow, overloaded, or failing.
- If the error continues, try installing to another drive as a diagnostic step. A different drive will not fix an account, network, or client problem by itself.
If Steam says the game is uninstalled or starts the download again
Do not delete the game folder or Steam library as a first step. The files may still be on the computer even if Steam no longer recognizes their location.
- Check whether the game folder remains in the Steam library where it was installed.
- In Steam, open Settings > Storage and confirm the library containing the game is listed. Add the existing library folder if it is missing.
- Start installing the game to that library. Steam may detect and reuse existing files rather than downloading everything again.
- Reinstall only if Steam still cannot recognize the files after checking the folder and library registration.
Steam cautions that external drives can disconnect and cause performance or library-recognition problems. If an external drive appears to be the cause, Steam recommends installing Steam and the game on an internal drive instead. Steam also warns that uninstalling Steam deletes game content, so do not remove Steam or its library folders unless you understand what will be deleted.

If the game downloads but will not launch
Use the exact error to narrow the fix. For a game stuck at “Preparing to Launch,” Steam recommends checking the operating system, drivers, game files, interfering software, and the title’s system requirements:
- Restart the computer and install available operating-system updates.
- Update the drivers relevant to the game and your hardware.
- Verify the game files through Steam.
- Temporarily close non-essential programs that could interfere, then retry.
- Check the game’s Steam Store page for supported operating systems and minimum requirements. Steam notes that a system close to the minimum can still have launch or performance problems.
Linux and macOS users should confirm that the individual game supports their platform; support varies by game. If these general steps do not resolve a game-specific launch failure, contact the game’s developer through its support route on the Store page. “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
A security product may have blocked or quarantined the game executable. Check its quarantine or protection history and follow Steam’s instructions for that security software. Do not disable all security protection or create a broad exclusion. If no file was blocked, restart the computer and verify the game files. If the error remains, send Steam Support the error screenshot and system report as requested in its Missing Executable guidance.
“Game is not available on your current platform”
This message means the game does not support the operating system you are currently using. Check the Store page’s operating-system and hardware requirements before trying other fixes. If you bought the game from the Steam Store and it is incompatible with your computer, you can submit a refund request under Steam’s policy described below. Purchases made with third-party retail keys follow different refund handling.

“Game is already running”
A previous crash or hang may have left the game process open. On Windows, open Task Manager and end the game process only if it is actually stuck. On other systems, restart before trying again. If you use the Steam client beta, test outside the beta; also check whether another operating-system account is running the game. See Steam Support: Failed to start game (app already running).

Steam’s published standard refund rule, checked on October 4, 2026, is a request made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Steam says you can still submit a request outside those limits for review, but approval is not guaranteed. When to contact support
- Steam Support: purchase or account access, Steam client or library problems, and a persistent Missing Executable error after checking security history and verifying files.
- The game developer: a title-specific crash or launch problem after the general compatibility and file checks.
- Qualified PC support: suspected hard-drive or memory faults, or a problem tied to the computer’s hardware configuration.
