Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFirst check whether the SSD appears in your computer’s BIOS/UEFI. If it does not, focus on slot compatibility, installation, firmware, and hardware tests. If it does appear there but not in Windows, check whether Windows can see an uninitialized drive or whether Windows Setup needs a storage-controller driver. Formatting cannot fix a drive that firmware cannot detect.
Find out where the drive disappears
“Not detected” can mean two different things: the SSD is absent from BIOS/UEFI, or firmware sees it but Windows does not show it as a usable drive. The first points toward compatibility, seating, firmware, or hardware. The second may involve Windows partitions or storage-controller configuration.
- Open BIOS/UEFI. Use the startup key and instructions for your exact computer or motherboard model. Look in its storage, NVMe, or PCIe device listings for the SSD. Menu names and locations vary by manufacturer.
- If it is absent from BIOS/UEFI, continue with compatibility and physical installation checks below. Windows Disk Management and formatting are not the first steps.
- If it appears in BIOS/UEFI but not Windows, check Device Manager and Disk Management. If it is missing only from Windows Setup, check whether a storage-controller driver is required.
Some Intel server systems list VMD-enabled M.2 devices under “Intel Virtual RAID On CPU”; Intel’s menu path for checking this is specific to the server platforms covered in its server guidance, not a universal consumer-PC route.
Check that the SSD and slot are compatible
An M.2 connector does not guarantee that a slot supports NVMe. Check the computer or motherboard manual and compatibility list for the exact SSD model and slot. Confirm that the slot supports PCIe/NVMe storage, accepts the SSD’s physical length, and does not have a lane-sharing limitation that affects its availability. Intel recommends checking SSD support, system requirements, and the selected port before troubleshooting further (Intel SSD troubleshooting; Intel PCIe lane and configuration guidance).

Reseat the drive and inspect the connector
If you can safely open the computer and doing so is consistent with its warranty and service instructions, shut it down and disconnect power first. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to remove and reinstall the SSD, making sure it is fully seated and secured. Check the drive and connector for visible damage or debris. Intel’s SSD checklist recommends checking the drive, connector, and system requirements; its hardware troubleshooting guidance also advises disconnecting power before opening a PC.
If BIOS sees the SSD but Windows does not
Check Device Manager and Disk Management
Look in Device Manager for newly detected storage hardware, then open Disk Management to see whether the SSD is present but uninitialized or unpartitioned. A new, blank drive may need a partition and formatting before it appears as a usable volume. Samsung’s SSD troubleshooting FAQ describes setting up a drive in Disk Management.

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
Initialize, partition, or format the SSD only if it is genuinely blank or you have confirmed that any data you need is backed up. These actions can erase data; they are not appropriate troubleshooting steps for a drive that already contains files you need.
If the drive is missing from Windows Setup
Check the system maker’s documentation to see whether Intel VMD or RST remapping is enabled for the M.2 slot. In its Intel SSD installation context, Intel states that an RST driver must be loaded during installation when RST remapping is enabled; on the cited VMD-capable platforms, the latest RST driver supplied by the motherboard or computer manufacturer is required if VMD is enabled on the port. If it is not enabled, the cited drive should appear in installation without an extra driver (Intel installation guidance).

- KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]
Use the storage driver and instructions for your specific computer or motherboard. Do not toggle RAID, AHCI, or VMD settings indiscriminately: changing controller mode can stop an existing operating-system installation from booting.
Check for a model-specific firmware update
Outdated BIOS or SSD firmware can be a compatibility factor, but updating firmware is not the first diagnostic step. After checking compatibility and installation, visit the exact computer or motherboard support page for its update procedure and supported files. Intel and Samsung list firmware or BIOS updates among possible troubleshooting measures (Intel; Samsung). Do not rely on a generic menu path or an update intended for a different model.

Cross-test the SSD to isolate the problem
Testing the SSD in another compatible system—and, if available, testing a known-good NVMe SSD in the original slot—helps distinguish a faulty drive from a system or slot problem. Intel recommends both tests in its SSD troubleshooting guidance. If you use a USB enclosure instead of a second PC, confirm it supports NVMe and the drive’s physical size; an M.2 SATA-only enclosure will not test an NVMe SSD. Intel discusses USB-adapter testing in its hardware troubleshooting guidance.
